Right some of the pics from the docks this morning. Like I said, no pictures of the actual accident, was too late.

Damage to the stern of the Clann Na NOileain.

The Pantanal, the original ship that was to transport these ferries is now anchored in the bay along with the tug Celtic Isle.

    Great pics thanks vulcan.

Those Aran Ferries just don't want to leave Galway it seems.

I spotted another little 'oopsie' on RTE today, I have a feeling there'll be a local who'll have some explaining to do

Was that the other boat getting rammed out of the way by the pilot boat?
Saw it on the news and was wondering what was going on.

Are there any videos of splashdown?

I reckon they were trying to get to the now loose ferry and stop it colliding with the oil tanker, hence the rush

Yeah that's what it looked like.
I was wondering what the other boat was doing loitering around, seemed to reverse into the path of the pilot boat too and bounce it into the wall.
There were probably a few words afterwards.

How come RTÉ had footage of the lift and also footage of the aftermath but none of the the actual accident?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shlippery

I'm nearly sure they have footage of it falling but aren't allowed show it for some legal reason, hence the cut to the photo where you can hear the "splash" in the background.

Still, the whole thing's very interesting, although slightly unfortunate!

The Thor Gitta is huge. Walked past it tonight, really is an impressive piece of machinery, it dwarves the little ferries parked beside it.

Any idea when they're going to try again? Dya reckon it'll be a few days while they figure out what went wrong?

The camera man seemed to get bored filming the actual lift so decided he'd get some filler shots of the workers on the other boats and managed to miss the money shot!

Saw the incident happen yesterday as I was cycling to work.
Was reaching into my pocket to take a pic when the cable snapped.
Got some shots of the aftermath:

Thats the Sun setting, happens every time when Summer comes around as it sets more to the North West, take a look tomorrow and you will see it again.

There is actually another bright object moving in the sky after the sun sets but i would say it was the moon setting. it only looked like a meteor due to the time lapse. The setting sun is seen as a black disc due to its brightness overloading the camera.

The RTE coverage is here, which mysteriously stops at the point of impact.

I don't think there's any footage of the incident..
The camera man appeared to be looking elsewhere when the cable snapped..
Some footage of his camera swinging back around after the incident.

What's the latest on the boats? Have they been moved yet?

I wish they'd kick their webcam back into action! Anyone living along Dock Road fancy putting one up...? ;)
