Cult Heroes: Appreciation Thread

Post your love for the players that played for your team that weren't necessarily the greatest in the world, but are still looked back on fondly to this very day for whatever reason.

Mine for Waterford United is Dominic Iorfa, former Nigerian international who showed up towards the end of the season around 1999 and kept us in the Premier with a few timely winners. He was big, strong, fairly fast but his first touch was pretty woeful and he loved getting caught offside. We used to sing "Iorfa for Ireland" in response to the St pats chant of "Hawkins for Ireland." He missed a penalty on his debut I remember, wearing vile yellow boots.

Hi wikipedia shows a fairly chequered career where he never really excelled anywhere or did anything of note. But we'll always love him regardless. Seems to have equal cult status at Peterborough. His son, also Dominic signed fpr Wolves there a while back, which makes me feel very old.

Bobby Petta, despite being quite useless most of the time a small few quality performances (6-2 against Rangers) left a legacy in no way way matching his input nor ability, still love him

Romford Pele. Loyal. Dependable. Tenacious. He was a much better player than he was given credit for. Was quite sad to see him leave. Legend.

When he was bad, he was very very bad. Not the most athletic and would be intensely frustrating. Split the support, then would score a freekick or one of his laser-guided corners..

Scored a cracking equaliser against Man United a few years ago. Was disappointed when he went to Burnley even though he didnt do much else for us.

Definitely the key Liverpool one for me.

Nutcase of a man who for much of his time with Liverpool under Ged (and with Croatia) was fairly mentally fragile, but Rafa really got the best out of him.

Was a key player for us in 04/05 as a box to box midfield dynamo. He really made up for the matches where we were missing either Didi or Gerrard. Started 7 of our champions league games that season on the way to victory - including both legs against Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea.

    Hero.

I was just about to post Beach Boy, jesus he was terrible but some servant to the club. Played for Liverpool too somehow?

Tony O'Dowd would be another one my cult players. I have endless amount of pictures of him (Remember when Bobby used to give them out) and his thing was to never look at the camera incase it made him play badly. Between him and Stephen Grant doing Zoolander, I always enjoyed them photos.

Another EPL player would be Dean Windass. I seen him on Soccer AM, and the lad is certainly a cult hero.

Definitely the biggest cult hero for Barca in my lifetime, anyone who spends 5 years at Madrid and sees out his contract so he can specifically come join Barca is going to be a legend. He's also doing an unreal job with the B team after taking over from Pep. Such an all round legend, love the guy!

I'l always love him for being a key part of the 07/08 season, put in some great performances..looks like he won't be getting a new contract in the summer, absolutley plagued with injuries the poor lad.

Two good Arsenal shouts already but I'll also add in Christopher Wreh - scored a few key goals in 1-0s on the way to Wenger's first trophies (the double in '97-'98).

    Juguetes2.jpg

    And of course:

    Image12.jpg

Went looking for a picture of Michael Thomas but given that it's Rocky's 10-year anniversary today, we'll include both of them. Thomas got booed coming back to Arsenal with Liverpool but he'll always have hero status for that goal in my eyes.

Jimmy Aggrew-Big stocking of a defender played one season for bohs a shocking player but scored on his debut against rovers loved by every bohs fan

    kevin_hunt.jpg

Without a doubt Kevin Hunt is my favourite player of all time. I first seen him play when i started supporting bohs as a 12 year old he might not have been roy keane or a patrick viera but he was to me, a true gent off the pitch as well. sadly had to retire due to Personal issues regarding his family, He is currently a scout for Man City

No wait, that is not all. I still remember John Pemberton 'fouling' Stan Collymore in the box. We got no penalty and that match still hurts (i was watching it with Leeds fans at the time!!!) And Collymore was out for weeks!!

Diego, especially after this celebration after that goal.

    forlan-vs-pool-the-offside.jpg

    Massive +1 for Forlan.

The man was truly a cult hero. Chants of "Diego, Diego, Diego" coming from the Stretford End whenever he was introduced or warming up.

Then the game against Liverpool, and the "He came from Uruguay, he came the scousers cry" chant, which can still be heard in Old Trafford to this day.

Truly one of my favourite players, I've enjoyed watching him become one of the best strikers in Europe over the last few seasons. His scoring record is outstanding.

Delighted to see him get the Golden Ball at the World Cup too.

    Was gonna post Serginho.
Absolutely loved at Milan. Played every Left and central position for Milan during his time there, started as a winger, moved to left full, then centre mid, then as a second striker, back to left full, then as a striker for a few games during a bad injury crisis, played CB in a few cup games, only positions he didnt play were right back and in goal.

Is a total legend and was, for a long time, one of the fastest players in the world, would just ghost past people.

    <3 Sergio.

how has kevin kilbane not been mentioned? i dont see how an irish person couldnt love the guy. absolute hero, loved him since i went to see ireland match in like 1999 and he scored might have been debut or 1 of first matches. i remember the abuse he got from sunderland fans always made me sick..

something i think casual fans forget

KEVIN KILBANE WENT TO AN ENGLAND UNDERAGE TEAM TRY OUT MATCH WEARING AN IRELAND JERSEY. HE IS ENGLISH BY NATIONALITY BUT HE IS AS MUCH IRISH AS ROBBIE KEANE OR RICHARD DUNNE. HE TURNED DOWN A CALLUP TO ENGLAND UNDER-21 SQUAD.

he would have never ever ever played for england over ireland

Put his heart into everything, not the best footballer to ever play for De Town, not the fastest, but had the biggest heart.

Also the quickest sending off EVER in a League of Ireland game!

    rod4.jpg

A man so loved by Athlone fans, one of them wrote a book about him.
