GPS Sat Nav on HTC Desire v Nokia N8

I'm told that the Nokia is better for GPS Sat Nav as the maps are pre-installed. Can someone offer advice on why this is better and what it means for roaming charges while abroad. Can anything be loaded to the HTC to overcome this...?
