Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was clearing out an attic and came across an old lens from when 'hobby-ed' in Photography.

I am pretty sure its for a manual Nikon and almost certain its wide angle - fish eye- just any other pointers before I stick it up onto adverts.
Letters engraved onto lens body -> f=28mm 1:2.8 Image MC No.285328.
    Macro 1:4.5 1:5 1:6

    Thanks

Does it have 'nikon' or 'nikkor' anywhere ? Can you put up a picture of the front of the lens, the lens mount, and a general overview ? Difficult to ID otherwise. It's 28mm, f/2.8 , Probably multicoated, the number is a serial number, and it seems to have relatively close focus capability, either 1:4.5/5/6 as you focus closer or something ? hard to tell.

    Hi Daire,
No it doesnt have 'Nikon' or 'Nikkor' written on it but the only manual camera I ever had was a Nikon.

from the (rather bluury :) ) pics, looks like an F-mount all right. It would -appear- to be either AI or AIS, there looks to be a metering ridge on the mount. Can't tell between them without clearer pictures. It's a straight 28mm f/2.8 wideangle by the looks of things. Can't tell which brand, some 3rd party manufacturer. The 'Image MC' thing rings a bell, might be vivitar or cosina or something. Which nikon body did you have ?

Yeah the pic quality is dire. Blackberry camera is crap!!!
The dial which would be closest to the camera body reads ' 22 16 11 8 5.6 4 2.8' and rotates independently
Dont recall what body it was.
    Thanks Daire

just to establish whether or not it's actually an AI/AIS lens, check out
    http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/nikonfmount/aiais.htm

Third row of pictures, your lens should look like the one on the left, with the red circle, and have what looks like a discontinuous ridge running around only part of the lens mount. Pre-AI lenses have a solid ring running around the edge. That's the most important thing to establish, as trying to mount pre-AI lenses on most cameras will result in damage to the mount.

the lens -does- appear to have the second smaller row of f-numbers close to the mount (the ADR as nikon calls it) which would lend weight to it being an AI/AIS lens.
The movable ring you're talking about is the aperture ring. If you turn it you ought to see the aperture stopping down and opening up inside the lens.

Yes it does have a discontinous ridge stopping where the f-numbers are stamped. However , as per your link, it doesnt have the 'rabbit ears' in the small red circle.

Yes the f-numbers are stamped in large writing and in small writing on the ring.

Third party lens makers rarely put the rabbit ears on AI or AIS lenses. Nikon continued putting them on for quite some time to ensure backward compatibility with earlier pre-ai bodies. Up until recently even the AF lenses used to have two small indents on the aperture ring to mark where to tap holes if you wanted to retrofit the rabbit ears.

Indeed it does have 2 holes for the rabbit ears.
Thanks Daire. Really appreciate your help.
