I really know nothing about mobile phones but I'm going travelling in America soon and wanted to bring a cheap phone with me in case I lose my IPhone while there. I was going to buy the Nokia 1616 from Tesco. But does that phone work in the USA as I know not all phones do? Thanks

No, it won't work. According to the specs on Nokia's web site there are two versions, one that supports European and one that supports American frequency bands.

When you're in the US just walk into a local Walmart, you should be able to get a cheap Nokia for $30 or so, including service. It should also work out much cheaper the roaming using your Irish SIM.

I wouldn't think so, there seems to be a European and an American version of this model.

The Samsung C3050 should work technically, not sure what roaming Tesco have there and the phone will be locked to Tesco.
