Took the tandem for a breakfast ride to Stellenbosch, just to bump into the Harvest festival parade http://www.stellenboschwinefestival.co.za/
(Stellenbosch is a wine producing area)

The only interesting thing to really highlight in the pic is the red clothed minstrel group in the background - one of the many "Kaapse Klopse": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaapse_Klopse

Stellenbosch is truly a jewel of a place - mountains, vineyards, oak trees, sidewalk cafes/coffee shops.

True, but the thieves made a dog's dinner of the only other lock I had. Only took a few hits with a sledgehammer to jam the locking mechanism. The key got stuck and broke when I tried to undo it, so now both the lock and the front wheel are stuck but both are beyond repair anyway.

It's frustrating to say the least especially since I only just had the bike fixed but the college security did a brilliant job in managing to save it on time and I still can't thank them enough! :)

@garzard:I have a spare front wheel (was for bike stolen on me) if you want one for free. It's just gathering dust now. I can leave it in my Bro's shop (Hewett's) in Monkstown for you.

I was looking for "the stolen bikes" thread but can't find it - it was on my "followed threads" list. Maybe I'm using the wrong title.

Edit:just let me know if you want it, so's I don't give the Bro an unwanted gift.

I've already picked up a new wheel from Halfords, but thanks for the offer all the same. Below are pictures of the state of the original wheel, still locked to the college bike racks. There's a few spokes cut but otherwise it's in good nick, would it be worth salvaging?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,641 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

If the rim wasn't twisted or fractured, and the hub spoke holes are intact, I'd say yes. A good cycle shop could put in new spokes and, if necessary, re-dish the wheel to prevent it rubbing against the forks.

PS, some cyclists and shops might advise against using wheel reflectors as putting them on sometimes twists the spokes out of shape and results in them loosening and causing the rim to move out of shape.

there should be no problem to fix that

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,224 ✭✭✭alaimacerc

Unless there's a massive kink in the rim, as the previous two have said, should be readily reparable.
If you're unafraid of a spoke key, not a hugely difficult repair to do yourself -- tighten each spoke in turn a little, progressively, be careful not to over-tighten any single one. Otherwise, your FNBS will be pleased to give you a quote on spoke replacement and wheel-truing.

She's not finished, I need to get matching silver spacers for the stem, a nice set of mudguards, better wheels and so on.

She rides like a dream though, very spritely, smooth shifts and lovely handling.

That is a stunningly beautiful piece of kit!!

It's a Surly Troll Frame I built it up 2 years ago with Shimano Alfine 11 Hub, Avid BB7 brakes and various bits and pieces. keep changing parts from time to time but overall I'm very happy with it

Great photos, but how do you manage to take your dog cycling?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,224 ✭✭✭alaimacerc

In my canine cycling experience, the question is more usually, "how do you go for a bike ride without being chased and barked out by half a dozen dogs?"!

A couple of rubs from a knobbly front tyre and Bodhi’s learned to keep to the side/behind although there is still the occasional blonde moment causing me to haul on the anchors.
No interest in road riding he just wants to shred trails and get lost in the woods, wade through fowl smelling putrid ditch water, surprise the occasional deer and make friends with other riders & walkers.
90% of my off-road riding is done on a single-speed so he burns me whilst I mash my way up the long climbs before taking up his regular tail end position when descending.
A 12k+ XC spin will have him flaked out for the rest of the evening so I’m left in peace to enjoy any post-ride beers.
Isnt every ride better when you hit it with a buddy?

So what you're saying is that the answer to the question "does a dog have 'wants to go out for a bike ride' nature is not a completely straightforward one, then? :D

Above the "Berg River Dam" in Franshoek, the most recently build (2009) water reservoir for CT. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berg_River_Dam

There used to be huge pine forestry operations in the area, but removed in the last ~10 years to increase the runoff.

Great pics as usual. Is the local wildlife an issue when you're MTBing in SA? Baboons etc.

    Thanks.

In the western cape, no real issues with animals. The problem is really places where especially baboons came in contact with humans feeding them. (Lookout points next to public roads, very popular tourist attractions like Cape Point etc.)

In locations like in the pic, baboons, most snakes, rooikat (caracal) & cape leopards took flight long before you arrive. Worst thing is probably a pofadder (snake) taking a nap and that is to lazy to move away.

So if you cycle as remote as possible and make sure you are the slowest one in the group (like me) then you are fine. :) (There is nothing that will hunt you from behind ;) )

In the north, the same story - although the antelopes is a bit bigger if accidents happen. Places with the big 5 is fenced off and access is limited.
