Connemara today. Some morning for a cycle. I was told that both Clare Island and Achill Island are visible in that photo but I don't know which is which!!

This is from The Sky Road in Clifden. The rain was coming in at that stage but we got back to base just before the rain started.

at a guess, that's turk to the left, Clare island to the right, and (at a stretch) Achill barely visible between the two.

where was the pic taken from?

You're probably right. I'm not entirely familiar with the area but it was taken somewhere close to Tullycross?? We went from Clifden to Letterfrack and turned left in Letterfrack. After that your guess is as good as mine!!! Beautiful day for cycling and the roads were super too. Only bad surface we came across was on the Sky Road loop.

after a second look, i'm pretty sure i'm right. look closely and Caher Island can be seen just to the left of clare island, jutting out a bit.

beautiful part of Connemara around there.

Thank you. I only have a poor quality camera built into a mobile phone and the pictures do not come out well, but anyway - here it is :).

Looks great. Nice to have a holiday bike.

Manly gears by look of it. Roads are not to hilly though by look of it. CX bike might be in order at times? What tyres are you running?

The bike looks actually much better in real life than on the pictures. The wheels are now like new, and all is it top condition now. I may only replace the handlebars with something a little narrower, but it is not necessary.
    It also rides surprisingly well.

I have now 8 speed cassette on it, just enough. Yeah, the roads are flat in general, but some of them are interesting, as they go through forests, near old railway tracks, etc.
I actually discussed the bike choise for the local roads with my friends, and you are bang on with your theory :). A Cyclocross bike would just be perfect. Some roads are super smooth, but in my opinion the nicest are the soft roads that go around lakes and forests. I may consider a CX bike in the future just for this area.
    The tyres are Continental 4000S.

I needed to refer to Fr. Dougal's "smaller -- further away" diagram when I saw the size of yon saddle!
