DCENR have issued a consultation document on open access ducting for residences.

Although it is unlikely that multiple FTTH networks will be rolled out in Ireland, due to the high cost of civil works and the low population density….

Nonetheless, they go on to specify a duct that has provision for three fibre mini-tubes, copper POTS and two coax cables.

    Its this baby here..

    6034073

So, loads of redundancy built in on the customer side. Lets see if they're as far-seeing when it comes to the industry side.

The full consultation document is here and the deadline is 5pm on May 16th

There will be hardly any more development for the next 10 years, esp with Birth rate below 2.5 and Emigration. Should have been done 10 years ago. Better late than never?

Looks like they're proposing a recommendation rather than mandatory construction. I'm sure lots and lots of developers will voluntarily include ducting out of the goodness of their hearts.

Wow, in 2008 this was to be in place by the end of the year. Now in 2011 we're still consulting on it. It's almost like the last two years didn't happen but then most of the Cabinet were doing their hair while Brian^2 sold us to the Germans

Thats one of the questions on page 22.
1.65 Do you agree with the non mandatory approach of issuing recommendations rather than mandating construction ?

Yeah, I know. My experience with consultations (not from DCENR, in fairness) is that the initial proposal tends not to get varied from. Operators will say that they should be mandatory, developers will say that they should be optional, and my guess is that the Department will split the difference and go with what they originally proposed.

I'd love to be proven wrong.
