Tuning a mandola

Does anyone play a mandola and if so what do you tune it to?
I have a lend of a mandola and I have tried twice now to tune it to C, G, D, A but both times the D sting snapped as it was going too high. I know I can also play it in G, D, A, E like a mandolin but I really want to try it in the other tuning as it is recommended all over the web. Why is this happening?

What's the scale length of the mandola Paulie? i.e. length in inches from start of fretboard to nut. Your instrument might not be suitable for CGDA.
