Hi Folks (apologies mods if this is in the wrong section)
I am in the worst predicimant i could possibly think of, i need to find a new home for my near 4 year old staffie Max as i am moving abroad for work. Never in my wildest dreams did i ever think i'd have to part with him and its breaking my heart thinking about it:(. I cannot leave him with my father as his health is not the best and he has enough problems looking after his own pooch, my friends and I are actively looking for a good home for him with the past few weeks but cannot seem to find one. I will not give him to a rescue centre as they have enough issues trying to source owners for their own dogs and i really dont know what kind of home Max would end up in if he went to one of these places !! I'm worried sick about it. Should i put info/photos etc up in my local vets/shops etc or will i just be attracting the wrong sort
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

That sucks really bad, i feel for ya mate. I dont know what i would do but if i had to id probably start with an ad on done deal stating a rural area with active, dog owning people.

Hope he finds a good home.

My daughter and her partner are emigrating to Canada for work and they are taking their two rescue dogs with them. Have you given this any thought? I know its a big step but if you say it would break your heart to be parted from him....? She's the same so she wont go unless the dogs go too.

    Cheers,
to make matters worse Donedeal will not allow me(or anyone) to advertise a bull terrier for sale on their website !!

Sorry to hear that and I really hope I did not make you feel bad by suggesting it. I wish I could help you, but I have two rogues of my own here and couldn't see them accepting a third. I really hope it all works out for you and best of luck in your new home and job:)

Not all Shazanne, i'm open to all suggestions and appreciate them all :) thanks. Just breaking my heart having to even comtemplate giving him away, he is so settled in his ways. Other disadvantage i have is he needs a home with no children or other pets he has been socialised with both but not to any great extent.

Sorry to hear about your predicament, I couldn't imagine having to give away my two. I take it that none of your friends are able to take him?
Firstly, do not advertise on Buy and Sell, DoneDeal, Gumtree etc. You really don't know what sort of people would be respond, there are a lot of dodgy characters out there.
You mentioned that this is a worry you have with a rescue, but maybe you're confused between the rescues and the pounds
Whatever you do, do not surrender him to the pound. He will have just 24 hours before he will either be rehomed or pts and, unfortunately, Staffies do seem to make up a sizeable proportion of dogs that don't leave the pound. Also, there is no way of knowing what sort of home he may go to, as many pounds operate on a first come, first served basis.
I would recommend that you get in touch with some of the no-kill rescues. I know they are up to their eyes but they may be able to help, especially as you are running out of options. They really care for the dogs and do everything they can to get them good homes. They won't just hand him over to the first person that comes along, they will make sure that the dog and the people are suitable for each other, will do homechecks etc. Also, many have foster carers that keep the dog in their home until a permanent home is found.
irishanimals.com has a list of rescues around the country.
Also try Dogs in Distress, www.dogsindistress.org. They have a forum where you could post up about your situation, as does petsireland.invisionzone.com which is used by many in the rescue community.
EGAR (East Galway Animal Rescue) is a regular on here and does great work rescuing bull breeds - see www.egar.org
A Dogs Life is another experienced rescue - www.adogslife.ie
There are plenty more, as I said you will find details on the irishanimals site. I think that, if it was me, I would much rather any of these people help to rehome my dogs than some random stranger on a free ads site. Best of luck, I hope it all works out well for you and Max

Just on this, if you do find a rescue willing to take your staffy some will literally just give the dog to anyone that asks. I'm not talking about the ones already mentioned, just be careful. Some rescues are quite well known but it doesnt mean they are good in any sense of the word.

Sorry to hear about your problem OP, hope you find him the fantastic home he deserves.

Make sure you get the dog neutered first. I know you were enquiring about breeding it a while back.

+1 and make sure wherever you are 'advertising' him you stress that he is neutered

I would recommend you get in contact with Dogs in Distress, and have a chat with them and see if they can help out. They are a purely foster rescue - so your dog would be in a home environment until the ideal forever home was found. I rescued my dog from them and it was a great experience for all. She wasn't shell shocked like other rescue dogs that I've gotten because she was in a family home being taken care of like a real pet. They are fantastic people who do even greater work. I'm sure they'd be able to help you in some way or form with this predicament.
