Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Each time I try and load up google.ie, google.co.uk or google.com it says "The connection has times out." The only google page I can access is google.cz. I can also access any other website with no problems. Can anyone help me fix this please?

    What browser are you using?

If it's chrome right click up in the address bar and select "edit search engines". Just to make sure it's pointing at the right one.

Did you change\install anything on the machine recently?

Try and run a malwarebytes scan as a just-in-case.

Another thing to check (heh......ahem) is in Tools - Advanced - Network - Settings (click each). It should be set to either auto-detect or use system proxy settings. If you've anything else in there I'd say it's spyware\malware after changing it.

But sure run that scan, better safe than sorry.

Did you check the settings in Firefox?

Also after the scan did it request a reboot, try that. (Yeah, you'd be amazed at how many times 'turning it off and on again' fixes a problem).

Can you do a quick scan with your anti-virus program too?

Run ipconfig /all and show the results. I'm curious as to what DNS servers you're using.

Could be a HOSTS file problem.

More info: Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File. Read carefully.

The download and instructions are after the Editors Note paragraph.

Okay, so your DNS server seems to be working okay.

As per Tricky D's suggestion, we should next check your Hosts file. Using note pad or any other text editor, open C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and tell us what's in there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 613 ✭✭✭smog

Ok so your ip address is
    2002:59CC:F86B::59CC:F86B (IPV6) / 89.204.248.107 (IPv4)

Which is Irish ... so therefore you must have a forced proxy in your browser etc

As the IP addresses listed above are been read from your Ipconfig /all the next step is to see is your browser proxying through some cz IP (ie logging all your requests etc)

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com and if this is different to 89.204.248.107 bets are its the proxy setting in your browser has been hijacked

Odd, but not necessarily a problem. Follow Smogs advice about checking what your external IP appears as.

So when you access www.google.ie in a browser, what happens? Is it immediate failure? Is there an error code?

its says in the bottom left of the screen...connecting to www.google.ie..... but approx 10 secs later this message comes up..

    The connection has timed out

The server at www.google.ie is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

What about in Internet Explorer? Is it the same?

In Firefox, go to tools -> options -> advanced -> network -> settings

and see if anything is set in there.

Also, are you behind a router/modem?

You could try ipconfig /flushdns in a command prompt as well and try in a fresh browser session.

all that is selected in that is 'use system proxy settings'. I am not on a modem, I use a dongle

Curious. Change that to no proxy and try.

I must admit, I'm running out of ideas, there's no DNS hijacking, no Hosts file hijacking, no proxy hijacking. It's hard to tell if the traceroute shows anything untoward since ICMP throttling is commonplace on the flaky mobile networks.

spear thats no problem at all, you have been a massive help, i very much appreciate your time and patience trying to resolve this, think this could be a "I dropped my laptop, please give me a new one" job haha

For comparison sake, what does tracert www.google.cz show? I would have though that would take the same route out, but I'm curious to see if it avoids Tiscali in doing so.

Doubt a new laptop is going to help you here .. really looks like your ISP routing has gone a bit haywire.

Looks like O2 routing through old Esat gateways and then hands you over to tinet.net in Germany ... so something has gone wrong with the ISP peering and routing .. this is most likely temporary

    http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=express&host=89.149.184.153

You could try disconnecting your dongle/usb wireless and let it reconnect geting a new IP address from yourself potentially from a different block therefore not suffering from routing issues.

Sorry for the standard turn it off and on again response but this judging from all above doesn't look to be a problem on your end but rather your ISP - Hope that helps

Yup, different path, doesn't touch Tiscali. You can alert your ISP, but they'll probably already know.
