I'm heading over to Perth in May with 3 friends. Can anyone recommend any nice hostels or cheap places to stay for about 2 weeks untill we get on our feet. I've had a look at loads on the internet but its hard to know what the place is really like unless someone has been there before.

    Thanks :)

The Globe on Wellington Street is pretty good and is as central as you're going to get.

They also do deals like 7 nights for the price of 6 etc. There's loads of places to choose from but that's one of the best from what I know.

I had a look at the reviews on tripadvisor.ie about The Globe already and they are really really bad. Everyone saying do not stay here. But thanks anyway

Weird. I've known plenty of folk who stayed there, including one lad for a couple of months and said it was great.

I stayed in the Britannia in Northbridge and that was quite nice.

The Underground is also very popular.

Don't go near the Old Swan Barracks.

I HATED the Britannia on William Street, roaches all over the kitchen and our room was like a coffin..

I stayed in North lodge on Beaufort St and Exclusive Backpackers on Adelaide Tce they were both better.

If you're looking for somewhere nice to stay while you get on your feet I'd recommend the Perth City YHA on Wellington St.

It's slightly more expensive than some of the cheaper places but it is still a good price. It's nice and spacious and has got aircon, great kitchen, study room all that kind of thing. It's even got a gym! Not all necessarily necessities, but it sure is nice to have somewhere comfortable to base yourself if you're trekking around the city all day, busting your ass looking for jobs and what not.

But if you're just looking for somewhere to crash and party, take your pick from any number of other ones, they're cheaper but can be rough, especially in the heat over there.

Also if you haven't checked it out already, have a look at hostelworld.com, especially at the user reviews which are very accurate when you look at the average customer scores each hostel has recieved.

    Good luck with it!

I can only speak to my own experience. Stayed in both Underground & Spinners in Northbridge in my time, both ok. Good pubs closeby etc.

Underground is better of 2. Have a pool which is handy, staff were brilliant booking stuff for us etc. Clean enough rooms an all that.

Spinners, further down the road is a bit less chic, no pool, but its relatively ok and cheap enough from what I remember. Its across the road from a late night bar called the Bog (i think) where we had a few interesting nights aswell!

Either of them are ok, id try underground first though. Northbridge is a good spot aswell, loads of excellent bars/club/restaurants etc...Town is pretty closeby aswell. I presume you'll spend some time in Freemantle aswell, great spot that.

I really liked the swan barracks!! Good craic, lots of Irish and ppl that are stayin longer term.

Do not go anywhere near central backpackers, stayed one night there it was just full of junkie aussies!! Billabong is quite nice but fairly far away.

Has anyone ever stayed in Ocean Beach Backpackers on Cottesloe Beach? If so what you think of it?

Looks decent enough and has plenty of good reviews. What's the area like etc?

I've stayed in quite a few hostels in Perth. This is two years ago, maybe some have changed slightly but heres my two cents

Easy Perth Backpackers - Great spot for me, good for socialising and meeting people because they have a great outdoors area out the back with benches and you can drink your own beer. A prettty laid back place with cool owners and usually decent crowds.

Some people may say its a little run down but honestly unless you're prim and proper there is nothing wrong with the place. Those kitchens were very clean compared to some other places I tells ya! Right in the thick of northbridge. Its also one of the cheaper hostels around and pretty much good value. Only drawback is lack of decent air con

Bambu - Right around the corner from the above, more of a party hostel - again you can drink your own beer. Good for weekends but I wouldnt recommend it if you're planning on sleeping anytime! A few cockroaches in the kitchen...

The Globe on Wellington Street - Haha, what can I say - dirty, noisy (try sleeping 10 feet away from noisy street sweepers out on the road at 4am with a serious case of jetlag) dodgy - two speed freak locals stayed in my room one night - a laptop was stolen from the room, pretty tense night. Moved out asap. Kitchen had roaches...

The Underground - Nice place - good facilities - if you're up for drinking for the first couple of weeks it will cost you as there is a bar there and if you get caught bringing in stuff you'll get chucked out. Bit of a mad place at the time I was there... had a rep for being a bit wild.

Old Swan Barracks - Again, a bit of a mental place, would only stay here if I had very few valuable belongings and felt like drinking a lot. Good to visit at 4am for the big screen and football.

The Grand Central - Whatever you do dont stay here. Seriously. It had some bat**** crazy locals. One shower between three floors, some extremely paranoid and accusative owners.. generally a bad vibe. Sitting around in the common room watching b movies on VHS, weirdos barking nonsensical gibberish at the tv. Not cool. Almost like something from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And the kitchens were like some kind of mecca for cockroaches.. there were so many some times I just had to laugh. What a sheethole
