Looking at starting a small sheep enterprise but don't have any experience of this. From an official point o fview (i.e. keep the Depart. of Ag. happy) does one need to buy at the mart or can I just go and buy directly from a newpapaer ad in the paper?

Probably got no response as most farmers too busy lambing.!!

you will need a Herd Number but after that you can them off farm or at the mart once you receive the official moving permit form with them.

There are allot of trouble and although prices are good at the moment dont under estimate the work or hassle you can get from them.

Best of luck if you do decide to get into them!

Yeah, you just need a herd number, sheep register and movement forms. The Dept should sort you out with all of these.

Then, you can buy and sell what & where you want. Provided you have the right tags on all the animals (new tagging rules in this year)

THEN - once you find out the rules, come back on here and tell us ;)

As for sheep being a lot of trouble - it depends on your set up. First thing is do you have good ditchs & sheep fencing? If not, they will break your heart.

as John says first stop is your DVO (dept office) ,,if you haven't already got a bovine herd no. the dept will issue you with a flock number (or flock indentifier no don't know what it's called now) and the relevant documents, you can then get you own tags and buy any where you wish
