I was on to Dolmen today for a quote.
THey mentioned that ther breakdown cover was "basic enough" do people tend to get additional cover for european trips (France, Spain)?

Very few companies offering addition cover out there. I previously took a policy with http://www.mondial-assistance.ie/ but arranged through a club, not sure if they do individual policies.

VHI Travel Insurance have a "driving" add on.......this might be an option depending on the ize of your van

I posted this info on ADAC previously. I have this cover for a few years now.

ADAC are a German automobile company similar to AA. They provide annnual breakdown cover for about 80 euros which covers all vehicles that you drive, see info from them below.

"The ADAC membership protects you when driving your own and other party's vehicles in Germany following a breakdown, accident and theft.

Beside the tried and tested ADAC membership there is the ADACPlusMembership: it combines the traditional club membership with ADAC Euro-Schutzbrief.

Being an ADACPlusMember constitutes a major extension of services in Germany for you. Furthermore, we offer you financial safeguards in other European countries. In the event of illness and injury we will even protect you worldwide. The costs of medical treatment by a doctor or in a hospital on journeys, however, are not covered by the ADACPlusMembership.

max. total length 2,55 m
max. total height 3,- m Motorcaravans max. 3,20 m
max. admissible total weight 3,50 t Motorcaravans max. 7,50 t
max. number of persons (incl. driver) 9 persons

The insurance covers free of charge the towed one-axle trailer which includes the above mentioned dimensions and weights (including cargo). Trailers whose axles are less than 1 m apart are regarded as one-axle trailers.

For motorhomes exceeding the defined maximum dimensions, the following benefits shall be excluded:

- Off-road recovery (Paragraf 26)
- Vehicle transportation (Paragraf 30)
- Passenger transport 'Pick-up' (Paragraf 31)
- Vehicle customs clearance and scrapping (Paragraf 33)

Hi Corkbuoy,

Thanks for the info on ADAC, but I have a query.

I wrote to them to try to get insurance for a summer trip to France. I just received an email saying that you have to be a resident of Germany to get cover.

How do you overcome this rule? Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for a bit more cover than Dolmen provide (vehicle repatriation).. mondial won't quote me and I don't know where to get this cover.

ADAC membership (which covers all Europe including here at home) is available to non German residents @ €79.50 pa. See brochure attached.

Although I dont see it mentioned here I seem to remember that adac limit
you to a camper under 10 years old.I would love to be proved wrong as I am hoping to go to France later in the year
