The patented McGahon report will be uploaded tonight. I'm just going for my chinese now!

Excellent night, got to put a few faces to usernames. Great fights, obviously I'm gutted about the Torres loss but I always said the SBG guys have gameplans down to a T. Very similar to how Chris beat that blackbelt in his last fight.

That was actually not bad, a couple of things though -

You really need to be more respectful of fighters. By all means say a fighter looked like he was lacking mount escapes, but you dont need to start insulting someone who stepped into the cage and went for it. It's not as easy as it looks. Maybe it's just me, respectfor fighters is a big deal for me, but a few things like that irritated me.

Also just a general request, could you be a bit more specific, I'm not askin for play by plays but as someone who wasn't able to watch the fights last night I clicked on your report hoping for some idea of how the fights went and I'm not really any more enlightened than I was after reading mark leonards twitter!

Bias ? It's fine to be biased, in my opinion anyway, but I would have liked to have some idea what actually happened in the Torres mulpeter fight! Also frankly tying into my first point I think it's a bt rich to talk about fighters getting KTFOd and then complain about SBG cornermen and team mates aggressively, disrespectfully... Running Into the cage and hugging their team mate? How rude.

But hey this is all just my opinion and fair play to you for writing a report and putting it up for people to critique, just my 2 cents.

Hey Mark, I'd say you were more disappointed about being stuck in the mountains somewhere and the first source of results was mine. I understand internet may be hard to come by so sorry about that :D.

I have respect for any fighter who steps into the cage. However I find it hard to respect someone who hasn't prepared and in the end are only denying the fans a good show. I had the misfortune of attending my own clubs show (before the club closed) where we were going to see the coming out of so many good local fighters. We were assured they had been drilled standing up and on the ground and every fighter bar 1 lost, a few of them looking weak in mount. It's just a sour issue with me that I'm easy to be critical of. While I love mount escapes for BJJ after sparring for the first time last week I realise how hard it can be when your getting headshots ! So for the future I'll leave the venom out in relation to Mount!

I wish I could be more specific however a flaw in the last review apparently was that I was too play by play and discussed every round while not reviewing the event. Admittedly the guy was a blatant tr*ll but I still took into consideration and tried to adapt it. At the end of the day I'm (hopefully) only starting my Journalism degree in September so at the moment I suppose I'm polishing my bad habits but any experience is welcomed. As is all forms of criticism.

If you're reading this before another report then ok. Sebastian looked like he had has no more gas midway through the second round. He landed a few leg kicks in the first. Yet he rarely shot for the takedowns in the first, I thought the reach disadvantage really worked against him as Mulpeter was able to control the fight. Seb ate a lot of shots as well as blocking as many in the first but you could see Phillip was picking him off. Sebastian did get it to the ground I think in the first but more so in the second. Thought he was working for some deep half guard stuff and Seb's best spell was when he had him up against the cage from a double leg. Landed some good shots that were unanswered and tried to take the back. He lacked pure raw wrestling / power take downs as he really seemed unable to get any of his Judo or BJJ going. I'm saying that now as It's the morning after and I'm not too annoyed over it anymore so I'll throw it in now. The KTFO was classless and has been edited, again that's sour grapes on my part which I should leave out. I've no problem with hugging and running but swarming the cage shouting screaming while Redmond was still in the cage I just thought was a little bit OTT. The security were on top for the main event as I'd say half the arena was going to pile into the cage for Roddy.

Please if anything rip it apart more. As I said to the guys last night every one of us is just delighted we get to be there. I love MMA and all this writing, the radio I do is meerly experience for what I hope to forge a career out of so if there are blatant bad habits in there, I want them out.

    Enjoy the mountains !

    My picks are:

Mulpeter over Torres (upset of the night)

Roddy and Ben will be great, but I think it will be a decisive win for the champ.

I don't see Redmond surviving, no disrespect to Redmond but Chris is a much more developed fighter in all areas.

    ;)

Brilliant event. By some distance the best event I've been to yet. Great, exciting fights, big crowd and an almost carnival atmosphere in the standing section too which has to have been a big hit.

I hope the live stream went off okay too. In particular, I hope we weren't live when myself and Stuart were, ahem, doing a sound check. A lot of great fights and fighters but definitely a special mention to Philip Mulpeter who is a monster at 70kgs.

And so the SBGi war wagon keeps rolling on. Very hard to see how any Irish team will knock them off the top spot in the next few years. The fact that all these quality fighters have came to peak at the same time tells me that they will keep each other on there toes while the group sticks together. Iron sharpens Iron as the man said. The bar has been raised.

    Thanks!

Just on the point about mount escapes, I think its also worth bearing in mind that when you slate a fighter and go "ah he obviously doesn't know how to get out of mount, he sucks" as well as insulting him it really takes away from his opponent, bcause you're suggesting he's only winning becuase the other guy has no idea what to do.

If someone is dominating you, it doesn't mean you suck (necessarily) - it just means they're better than you. I like to think I'm pretty good at jiu-jitsu but the last time i rolled with my coach, he passed my guard in about 3 seconds and then tapped me with a crossface. Doesn't mean I suck, it just means he's a lot better than me.

Appreciate the torres-mulpeter play by play, sounds like an interesting fight.

As for the cage-swarming - well i guess we just have different opinions, my stance has always been that positive celebrations, no matter how loud or exuberant, are totally ok, but it's not cool to be negative to your opponent. I don't really see anything wrong with running into the cage (particularly if its all people who are coaches/team mates and thus ok to be there, i think fans shouldn't get into the cage unless it's the fighters mum or something) - and I think it's kinda nice to see people so excited to win. I only saw the video of the finish so i don't know if there was anything more than that, but from what i saw it just lookd like a bunch of people very happy to have gotten the W.

Anyway thanks again for the report and keep going! Thanks for taking my opinions on board too.

Didn't think of that at all, makes sense now where you're coming from.

The more I think of it now I can see why they did it. The whole hype video that annoyed the SBG guys and the whole vibe coming out of that gym isn't ego as many people think it is. It must be just close knittedness ( is that a word ? ) So yeah they can celebrate till the cows come home I just guess had I just lost a massive fight it would be disheartening to see such joyful celebrations but I guess you gotta take the smooth with the rough.

Anyway I'll not derail a CC thread no more. Excellent night once again.

Why was it played at all? Complete cringworthy. I hope at least the fighters were informed that they would have to stand an extra few minutes in the ring.

On another note, it was a fantastic event, very well run. All the fights were great, some great finishes, fair play to all involved. Hope it comes here again soon. Look forward to watching it again on Setanta next week.

I had a great night at this. Huge respect to every fighter who got in there. Not one staller among the bunch, all gave it every ounce they had. The atmosphere was electric and I'm proud of my teammates and coaches for their displays.

I couldn't fault the event much apart from one or two little things. I thought not having the houselights up before the card started was a bit annoying as it made it quite hard to find seats. The national anthem was a bit naff too.

Otherwise, it was a fantastic event and a night I shan't be forgetting anytime soon!

Yes my very own thoughts. Not taking away from Chris Fields - excellent fight, my fight of the night - but he seemed to have John Redmond well sussed out. For example, when John Redmond had Chris Fields in the clinch and started throwing knees, Chris Fields almost timed it perfectly each time to trip up the supporting foot and John Redmond then to land on his back. Excellent perparedness in my 'expert' opinion :)

To be honest, I thought Chris Fields had too many tools in the box for John Redmond, though by no means would I say we have heard the last of the man from Rush.

Best organised MMA event I have been to, and that includes Cage Rage down in the Point a few years ago. Excellent, every detail taken care of, hats off to John Ferguson, even complimentary's for the after party !!! Met some MMAers down from Rathmelton in Donegal in the night club, good to see MMA clubs starting to branch into the small towns around the country.

Yay, I'm awake and alive - but still hanging!.

Right, fantastic event last night.. Any MMA fan's who don't checkout a Cage Contender event must have a hole in their head - its a brilliant display of Irish MMA talent.

I met a few new boards.ie 'friends, its always nice putting a face to a username - I wonder if the f*ckwit who kicked over my my three bottles of €5:50 Carlsberg is a boardsie

Can't recall any particular highs as it was rocking from the opening bell, loved Richie Gorey's victory celebration!.

On a personal level I'd like to extend a deep appreciation to John Fergusion from me & my wife for all you done for us last night, thank you - I won't forget it, we'd a ball and my wife left asking when is the next event - I'll never get a post-fight night out with the lads again :(

SDtimeout ya fecker, I don't have a swastika on my chest

This is the full fight from start to finish.

Its very dark as the fighters make their entry but from then it should be pretty much great quality.

The sound will clear up too.

Sorry I couldn't edit out the anthem :'(

What a night for Cage Contender, some great fights. Once again SBGi fighters put on a fantastic show, if any team deserved to celebrate they did, they are a different class. Well done to John Kavanagh and his fight team, an absolute pleasure to watch. ;)

An ignorant statement indeed, probably from a fierce keyboard warrior!. I couldnt understand how everyone was favouring gorey for this fight. ok fair enough he won and congrats to him, but from what i hear from people who have rolled with both Davern is by far the better grappler on the ground and against the cage...even with goreys judo black belt. Davern just didnt get a chance to get started. It was a shot that anyone could have been caught with.

Don't know how everyone else thought but i had a great night of entertainment and fights.

Really enjoyed the fights with most of them not even getting past the first round.

Was delighted to be out of the place and on my way to NV by 10.30, can't wait for the next one, the tallafornia boys are going on tour to belfast.

i seen on twitter from the bald commentator i think it was that the standing area had a carnival type atmosphere, i have to agree. We all had to go through this area to get to our seats, they were right beside the bar, had access to the food, grand view of the cage and or screens (unless your a midget) and had a machine to punch

    heres all that was missing:

    Hi Folks

Sorry that it has taken me a while to get around to this but it has been a pretty manic few days with one thing and another.

I just want to say a massive personal thanks to a few groups of people, without who CCX would not have been our most successful event to date.

Firstly to the fighters and coaches, each and every time I deal with you guys it reminds me of how lucky I am to be in this industry. Your passion, professionalism and dedication to what you do is inspirational - as I say time and again without you there is no show. - Thanks

The CC Officials - Refs, Judges and Time keeper - It's an often thankless job that you do, but you just get on with it and make it happen. The CC officials are a close knit team and it shows more and more every time - Thanks

CC Staff and Production team - You guys are working closest with me in the run up to and during the event, inevitably this means that you have to put up with my OCD demands and more often than not my temper :p , you know its for the right reasons but I would like to take this chance to thank you publicly for all that you do - Thanks

The fans - What can I say? You are amazing!!! You seen the Fightcard..... You read the Hype...... And you BOUGHT THE TICKET!!! you come back to CC time and again and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

If I have missed anybody, forgive me please and thanks!

    See u all soon

    JF
