I'm not an Arsenal supporter but one of the best centre halves I've seen in the PL in recent seasons is Thomas Vermaelen. Not sure if you could call him underrated though.

The most overrated player in the PL has to be Glen Johnson. Joe Cole is another

Personally think Vermaelen is overrated. If he hadnt have scored as many spectacular goals as he did last year I dont think he would have got as much praise as he has.
Although he's better than Koscielny, has had a couple of good games, most notably against Barca, but my god he has been awful in some games.

The reason for Liverpool's rapid decline was Hicks and Gillett's ownership of the club. Go further back and look at how David Moores ran or didn't run the club since 1991 when he bought in.

Lucas and Darren Fletcher are two severely under rated players, only their managers and team mates understand their importance

Going by our thread the day he was sold not a **** was given. Think there was myself and about two other posters who actually cared he was sold.

    "sure hes backup"
    "ah we have henderson"
    "he goes missing in games"
    "he gets tired too easily"
    "hes not strong enough"

Were pretty much the sweeping statements.

Who under rates Kuyt? I don't think he is either under or over rated. I think he plays at his level and goes about his job.

    Overrated

Andy Carroll - for the money Liverpool invested in him, at least.

Carlton Cole - how did he win caps for England?

Kaka - great, but never the best player in the world at any point.

Franck Ribery - his attitude is terrible - at least at international level.

Sergio Busquetes - average, dirty player, in an otherwise special team

    Underrated

Anderson - come on a lot in recent years, but still under the radar.

Pepe Reina - kept highest number of clean sheets for several seasons, yet more press attention given to Cech, VDS, Hart, etc.

Aaron Lennon - probably a better all round player than Bale.

Mario Goetze - at least outside of Germany, for now. Should change soon.

Ricardo Fuller - getting on, but one of the best controllers of the ball I have seen in recent years. Great provider too. Stoke legend.

Fabregas- Controversial? Well I think he's overrated in England because he's such a rare type of player. If he was playing in Spain he would not be seen as a very top player like he is in England hence why Barca are looking into signing Borja Valero instead. Also he goes missing in the big games far too often for me.

    :pac:

    Sorry

Mikel's very underrated. Just does a simple job.
He's a defence midfielder, what else is he supposed to do except break play up and then pass it to a team mate?

Not denying he was class, but even back then I would have put Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Samuel Eto'o , and maybe a few others ahead of him in the best player in the world category.

He's overrated at exactly just that. Listened to far too many delusional opinions on him for far too long. Comparisons with Makelele have arisen at one stage too. Just my opinion of course.

Lennon seems to be the harder worker of the two - guess that's why I like him more.

Bale goes very quiet against the elite PL teams - at least to date. That one Inter performance had the English journos going a bit silly. Still, he has youth on his side.

agree. never really rated him. I wouldn't rate him any higher than O'Shea for example. As an Irish player, and probably in general, he had a great attitude, and for that was the kind of player you wanted on the team, but too much was always made about his 'cultured' left foot. scored a few free kicks and piledrivers, but he was mostly a hoofer. I think he was one of the weakest players in the Liverpool teams he played in, but he was mature, and a left back, so he got away with it

LOL, mikel is not overrated. I have never heard anyone rate him highly. He breaks up play and passes sideways or backwards. That is all he does. For someone to be overrated surely they have to be rated highly in the first place, mikel is highly rated by nobody.

I dont think he is overrated or underrated tbh. He is a very 'meh' player

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

I've got to agree here. I've yet to meet anyone who over rates Mikel or even rates his as a top level player. He is rated where he belongs which is distinctly average in a Michael Carrick type way.

The comment about Kaka makes me wonder about some people. Before injury he was top class and yes held a very legitimate claim to be the worlds best. Makes me think you've done the typical ignorant thing and watched 1 or 2 champions league games, never watched him in serie a and based your opinion on that.

Lastly someone said Gotze was under-rated "but this will change". Come on lads seriously? This is in effect only his second season as a pro. He hasn't long since turned 19 so most people have no opinion on his other than he has enormous potential. Last season he was good but at times naive. This season he has started red hot and people proclaim his as under rated. How can he be under rated, he simply isn't that well known to most. Give him another couple of seasons before labeling him under or over rated.

Busquets, as much as I dislike him, is the best player in the world at what he does. How can you overrate that!?

As for Lennon, he may well be better than Bale but he isnt under rated, fantastic pace but thats about where it ends for him.

Sergio Busquets is an absolutely smashing player.

people dont rate him, as he is a bit of a p*ick, but my god is he a talented player. given his position, his age, his talent and what he allows the rest of the team to do, he probably would be the ideal player for United to sign right now.

and he can pass the ball also, he was absolutely immense in the CL final in May.

    haters gonna hate.

Richard Dunne won what Man City player of the year 4 years in a row or something for a centre half. Plus what he does for Ireland i dont know how you can say he is overrated. Nobody is calling him world class but he has been exceptional for Ireland and mid table Premiership clubs through his carear and deserves all the praise he gets.

Given has been a saviour for Ireland for so many years and performed very well in the Premiership all his carear i dont see how he is overrated. Given is still a top keeper and better than Joe Hart who is massively overrated only got the position at City because he is young and English.
