    Interesting article here http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/property/2011/0407/1224294085100.html

Seems like the national house price index, which would tell you exactly what houses in your area have sold for lately, is on the back burner.

I'm amazed by this. Surely consumer confidence re buying a house will increase when such an accurate database of real sales prices (and not the the avertised for sale price, which is rarely offered these days) goes online.

    quote from article above:

The PRA has been one of the more innovative areas of the public service, through the use of online services and eConveyancing, and it would be easy for the authority to set up a database showing the average price for a three-bedroom house or a two-bedroom apartment in a particular area.

this is the way to go, simple as that. no need going into detail for how much exactly which house sold for, so privacy is protected.

    I disagree.

Houses within a locality can vary enormously. Two houses on the same street with the same number of bed rooms can have different sized gardens, or be in different states of repair. A prospective buyer needs to be able to compare apples with apples and publishing just an average for a locality won't cut it.

The Department of Environment was more casual on the issue of the house-price database, omitting it from its briefing notes drawn up for its new minister, Phil Hogan.

Phil Hogan is part of the old FG guard that backed Kenny in the Bruton leadership challenge and has been rewarded with the Dept. Of Environment. He''s already gone on about putting more planning power back into the hands of the same councils who tore across the countryside with bungalow blight during the boom.

Now he wants to shelve the house-price database because the real truth of Irish house prices coming out doesn't suit his buddies. He might as well be Fianna Fail. A dangerous character our 'Big Phil', keep an eye on him

Please take your conspiracy theories elsewhere. Also- this really is not politics- if you want to discuss Phil Hogan and his particular allegiances- you have the politics forum for that.

With respect of the house price database- it could very easily be something as simple as the fact that its just one project thats been put on hold because of budgetary constraints. There is a long and varied list- its nothing to do with politics- simply the fact that the kitty is bare.

I, for one, genuinely believe that there will be a database at some stage- however along with many other worthwhile projects- it could well be some time in coming.
