What would you change?

So Gen V has introduced loads of brilliant new features such as reusable TMs and PC box access during trading, but there are still a number of inconvenient design choices which can get on my nerves sometimes. If I was in charge of the next games, I'd love to bring in some changes to make the whole experience more seamless. For example I would:

    • have a Day Care storage box which the day care lady interacts with directly. Having to swap Pokémon in and out of your party while she is sitting directly beside a PC seems so pointless.
    • have the Day Care Man/Fossil Scientist send eggs and Pokémon directly to your PC if your party is full. This happens all the time when you catch a wild Pokémon.
    • have an incubator PC box for hatching multiple eggs at once.
    • bring back the ability to select multiple Pokemon at a time in the PC.
    • have a way to use any HM at any time without clogging up your party - perhaps a small portable pc which lets you register 1 Pokémon for each HM, but not use them in battle.
    • make HMs overwritable and tradeable without needing the Move Deleter (to be fair, I'm sure there's some technical reason for this one)
    • sort the TMs alphabetically in the bag. It's awkward trying to find the move you want if you don't know it's number.
    • greatly reduce the encounter rate in caves and make it so you can't get into a battle while turning on the spot.
    • allow for the instant, cutscene-free and simultaneous trading of up to 6 Pokémon at a time
    • provide an in-game guide to EVs/IVs/Breeding/Movesets/Stats etc. maybe as an advanced function of the Pokédex - we shouldn't have to rely on the internet for this kind of stuff
    • bring back the ability to run automatically without having to hold B, or better yet, why not start out with a bike in the first place?

That's all I can think of for now but I'm sure there's more. What would you change if you were in charge of the next Pokémon games?

loll, I think I agree with most your points.

I dont get the need for still giving "running shoes", I never 'walk' without them, they dont need to be an option anymore.

I love the idea of the day care and TM's you mentioned!

I hate HM's. I'm glad you dont 'really' need them for the most part in this game, maybe thats the start of getting rid of them? I want them gone XD

you pretty much nailed it with all your points though.

EDIT: I'd also like a search function in the pokeboxes. Can be annoying to find a certain 'mon for trade or w/e.

While some things - Cut, Strength, Flash could be trainer based abilities, Fly and Surf just feel like they should be attached to 'mon. Still, any move you're required to have should be at least as good as the better high-end moves. make all the HMs moves that would be desirable on a type-friendly 'mon. Not necessarily Surf-level of awesomeness but Cut is a pathetic attack. If they'd just make it 100% accurate and hit for at least 65 or 70 points with a secondary effect (and make it Bug or Steel type! Why is it normal?) it wouldn't feel like a gimp. Same for Rock Smash. I know they can't give you the most powerful moves in the game before the first gym (well, they could if they were clever with the typing, eg Surf and the Electric gym, Fly and the Rock gym, Strength and the Fighting gym etc to mitigate the power) but given that Tackle is now hitting for 50 points and that's a default move in hundreds of new-borns, I don't think that's unreasonable.

Reinstate the portable Berry growing pots.

Remove repetitive lines of text that you only need to see once - eg the Nurse's speech every single time you visit the Pokecenter, the "time and a place" speech, the "you have found X, you put X into pocket Y" - I KNOW I DID, THAT's THE 37th "X" I'VE FOUND TODAY! STOP F'ING TELLING ME, I'M IN A HURRY! Apricorns and Berries are too annoying to farm in great numbers due to the amount of repetitive text you have to click past.

Releasing Pokemon into the wild in sufficient numbers should create a breeding population. If you're breeding for a shiny Charmander you are going to let hundreds of them go. Where do they go though, you never see them again!

Alternatively, I'd like to be able to trade pokemon for TMs or items with a guy who's standing behind a hotdog cart. Just a personal choice I guess.

While you'd immediately think that it's to prevent you forgetting the move after using it to get somewhere and ending up getting stuck there, you'd still have the capability to re-teach it to your 'mon, especially as I don't know of any circumstances where a 'mon loses the ability to learn an HM when it evolves...

That actually exists in the Japanese version in B/W, I keep making it happen by accident. Are you sure it's not in the English?

EDIT: They exist in English just only during a trade, tap the magnifier, a letter and then Pokémon have a blue box behind them. Pictures:

Bring back the Pokemon walking behind you. I loved that in HG/SS :(

Big cutscenes for only trading one pokemon at a time are so annoying! That And "say goodbye to boldore", "take goodcare of boldore" stop guilt tripping me!

When i get into a battle i'd like the option of choosing which pokemon i want to send out first rather than the one at the top of my party list being automatically sent out. Even if just for wild pokemon encounters it would make levelling pokemon a bit quicker.

What I would like is if the game looked as good on the 3DS as it does on the normal DS's. As it stands the game looks stretched and off colour... :(

Yeah, I know it's there when trading but it be handy to have it in the normal PC. I spent ages trying to search through for the female emolga I had recieved in the GTS.
Just think it would be helpful XD

I think the cut scenes are part of the loading & saving, better than seeing the word "loading" on the screen, no?"

A multi-trade would be handy, swap all 6 or 3 kinda thing :P

Please get rid of the Friend code thing and just have one universal name! I know it's not just a Pokémon thing but it's so annying having to type in numbers instead of just having one name for your DS. Although this is much better since they introduced IR.

Also another handy little feature would be if you could have the dowsing machine running constantly in a corner of the bottom screen or something, instead of having to close it and reopen it when you want to access your bag or whatever.

If you go into your bag and down at the bottom right there is an empty square between the green sort symbol and red x. If you check this box, the bag option will appear when you hit Y. You can access it without turning off the dowsing machine.

Unless the HM is being held by a boxed Pokémon, I suppose.

I really miss some of the Gen IV features that the Poketch gave you - the Daycare tracker, the step counter, the party display so you didn't have to press so many buttons to remind you who you were carrying and how they were doing...

The ability to choose who goes into a battle first on a case by case basis would make a lot of sense given that as far as game / show lore goes you have to throw a ball to start a battle but I guess you could argue that you walk around with one ball in your hand in preparation for the battle, and that's the lead 'mon.
Having said that I would want the option to turn that choice off - if you're grinding the last thing you need is more button pushing to start a fight. There's enough time wasted on intro animations :)

Why are you restricted to 6 balls when you can carry around hundreds of big heavy fossils, metal coats, electrizers etc etc? There's got to be more room in that bag!

I'd like to see a class system where, for example, Breeders could have larger parties, Trainers would have improved EXP gain, Hunters would have improved catch rates but it'd be difficult to come up with something balanced that didn't screw up the competitive battling...

Something that always annoys me with the exception of one or two mon, make the height and weight of each mon look believable on screen

The ability to run in diagonals.

That deerling form changes with the seasons after you catch it.

    Mine hasn't changed?
How do you bring about the change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

I'm just going to go on a limb here and say that people aren't aware that Deerling's form change is in colour only. It's Sawsbuck who changes more visually :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭SamIAmNot

How do you get it to change form after you have caught it? Because mine doesn't. I know they change form with the season before you catch them. Also I'm aware of Sawsbucks form changes.

According to Bulbapedia, they'll change form if they're in your party when the season changes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭elekid

This confused me too because it doesn't change if you leave it in the PC box and doesn't change immediately when you take it out. Try putting Deerling in your party, saving and turning off, then turning your game on again. It should be pink this month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

Ah, OK. Maybe I just thought wrong seeing as I have a Sawsbuck in my party on my Let's Play. To force it to change, you pretty much just need to screen transition with it in your party in a new season.

Argh! Just spent ages breeding for a particular nature + egg move combo, only to discover that the father had learned 4 new moves and the egg lady deleted the egg moves so they weren't passed down

I'd change it so that the Pokémon keeps all its moves in daycare and you get to choose between any learned moves once you withdraw it. Back to breeding *sigh*

...that's why the Step Counter was invaluable, saved me countless times in Diamond from making expensive mistakes...
