Myself and the missus were there when doing the trans-mongolian. Meh. Between the hoops you jump through to get a visa, the mostly dreadful food, the prices, the corruption encountered when dealing with the police, the "frosty" nature of many of the people we encountered, well it wouldn't be a place I'd visit again in too much of a hurry.

Ooh, thanks for this. I was thinking of doing the Trans-Mongolian but it's so expensive, so this post gives me food for thought.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Surprisingly little coverage at the moment, but will be a big boost for the UK in terms of publicity, you only have to look at how many journalists the US networks are sending over

    Heh. You're being sarcastic, right?

It will be a huge boost, mind. Take peoples minds off the wars, tory govt and high unemployment. After all, it worked in the 80s... ;)

I'd like to go to British Honduras, personally, then I'd like to go to the Irish Free State.

I know someone who went on holiday there a few years ago. They had to go on government tours and pose for official photographs and stuff. All very controlled and creepy.

Closest I got was a tour of the DMZ. Pretty intense. Things were tense between the 2 Koreas at the time.

Yeah , just as I thought to and that dreadful history in the sense of how a large nation turns in on it's own people with the paranoia and slaughter that was a normal part of daily life and the the whole slum like look of huge parts of it...

    Czechoslovakia?
    Absolutely.
Yugoslavia too now that I think of it.
Oddly enough however the USSR is a country I most definitely like to visit.
I'd love to see the motherland return some day.

one place I shouldnt want to go to but really do is Pripyat, mostly because I'm a big Call of Duty fan and it plays a big part in one of the games, but it also looks like the creepiest place on earth. A friend of mine went a couple of years ago and said its not so bad until you get into the school and see empty desk and headless dolls and the like around the place, creepy as ****

Same. There's very few countries I wouldn't like to visit. In its current state (or non-state) I suppose Somalia, but if things got under control in the future I'd go.

Somalia would top the list for me, Mogadishu is meant to be hell on earth

Ditto and add to that Saudi Arabia, Swaziland and Nigeria. Even tripadvisor only lists two hotels in Moghadishu, of which one has a review: http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g294440-d1229336-Reviews-Hotel_Shamo-Mogadishu.html

Located near K-4, 10 minutes drive from the center of the city, hotel Shamo is one of the best hotels in Mogadishu. The rooms are large, with air conditionned, wi-fi and electricity 24 h a day. The restaurant is extremely decent, and serve lobster when available at the fish market. The Shamo hotel is also relatively safe, which remains something important in Mogadishu.

That would put me off really. If i'm going to a war stricken place like that I'd expect at least one opportunity every morning to empty a few magazines of my AK47 into a bunch of troublemaking scumbags cause that just isn't legal where I'm from unfortunately

    What's wrong with Saudi Arabia?

I think some people have a bit of a warped opinion of some of these nations... probably from the media. Saudi Arabia is a beautiful country with fine people. Their wealth mainly comes from oil, true. US wealth mainly comes from their banking system and corperations systematically strangling other economies.

The US executes and tortures far more people than these countries. And despite what the western media sometimes likes to portray, it is NEVER for a simple offence like adultery or homosexuality.... not in countries like Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia.... the so-called "axis of evil"....

OH NOES!!! THE AXIS OF EVIL!!!111!!!1

You can thank each other all you like and live in your ridiculous euro-centric ignorant view of the world.
