Can a GP refer me for an MRI?

Long story short, I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow, solely to ask him to refer me for an MRI.

5 years ago a consultant referred me for an MRI and it showed I've mild arthritis in my lower back. I want another MRI to see if it's progressed since.

Can my GP refer me for an MRI? Or will he only refer me to a consultant, who will then refer me for the MRI?

    Thanks!

The GP can refer you. I've been referred twice by my GP. If you have private health insurance, make sure though that you meet the conditions that they've set for paying for it.
