The 6850 would be better than both of them, and is the same price as the 460.

Ok, sorry but I'm next to clueless about this, but would these all be very well performing video cards?

There's a 5850 going for €126 delivered from pixmania - see the stickied bargain alerts thread.

Are you buying just a card or a whole system?
Ensure that your power supply unit is strong enough for whichever card you choose.

Right on.. and I would go for Radeon 6850 in that price range.
x850 series have the best price-per4mance ratio as default, plus overclocks for sure 20% with quality stock cooling system and is very well compatible for 1-2 yrs ahead if you don't demand Full HD 1920-resolution.

Powercolor 4850 PCS+ served me for 1.5 yrs, I just changed to this asus 6850 directCU V2 model
    779c_xlarge.jpg
and got 30% boost in games speed and high details at 1440x900 resolution. still 30% cooler and wicked quiter.
(Thats with 2-core S775 cpu which is my bottleneck until get new S1155 platform.)

5850 is just a bit faster than 6850 but I got higher model number just for convenience :P plus specifically this model has very efficient cooling solution.
which is a catch.. see those fancy model names above (directCU and PCS).. its factory built and tested cooling systems.. all this bling performance and coolness is not totally for free but still worthwhile vs cheaper basic models+aftermarket coolers..and saves you hassle on upgrading work.

No. S754 requires AMD processors and LGA775 is from another camp Intel.

About power supply aka PSU.. Radeon 6850 uses less power than 5850 http://www.hwcompare.com/5916/radeon-hd-5850-vs-radeon-hd-6850/

man install this tiny app and tell exactly what components you have now, and whats purpose of new computer

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Sockets 775 and 754 are very old. I'm actually surprised that they have 754 board there.

Lets start from scratch. What is your budget and do you need Windows/speakers/keyboard/mouse?

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Ok, sorry I really started off badly, you guys know a lot more than me :D

I'm building a gaming PC, and I already have a case and a power supply, as well as a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and a DVD drive.

I had planned to buy all my new components (motherboard, CPU, graphics card, RAM, hard disk, OS, fans) from Hardware Versand as they appear to be the best site for value and conveniance.

I know very little about building PCs, so I am probably missing a lot of info. Thanks for all the feedback so far and I will try to answer any questions you have. My budget is 500-650 euro.

Before we go any further, what kind of power supply have you got? Make, model?

    @Johnny

No point getting a H67 board and an unlocked processor, you'd want to bump it up to a P67.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Sorry, I'm at work too so I can't get the make and model of the power supply right now. Thanks again for the feedback.

Just a question about CPU, should I forget about a dualcore processor and go for a quad or 6 core processor? A friend of mine got a 6 core AMD processor for 160 euro, apologies again as I can't get the exact make and model right now, but of course I'd need a different motherboard, so would it be better going for this AMD one or the Intel processor you suggested?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

The intel will be a bit better although you'd need to spend €100 on the motherboard, IMO. That cuts things a little fine when you add in your OS, case fans delivery and possibly a new PSU.

AMDs are a bit cheaper and you'll still be able to run all games well with a good graphics card.
Do you know what resolution your monitor is?

You'll be looking at more than dual cores for certain either way.

I think the resolution on my monitor is 1200x800, not 100% sure, however I do plan on buying a 19 or 21 inch monitor later on this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Assuming that you go for a 1920x1080 monitor, you should be able to run nearly all games at that with a 460/6850/5850/6870.

I would recommend you go for the 5850 or 6870 (or more - 560/6950) if gaming is a priority.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Ok, thanks for the info. I might put more money towards a graphics card because I won't be ordering components for at least 6 weeks and I might add to my budget in that time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Maybe you should wait 6 weeks so and ask again. Prices could drop €50 making the intel system fully affordable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Well I will be posting again to confirm everything's alright before I order. Thanks for the scope anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Ok, I'm still not fully decided, but this is what I have my eyes on so far.

    MOTHERBOARD:
    ASRock 770 Extreme3 - E63.23 http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=34992&agid=1232&lb

    CPU:
    AMD Phenom II X6 1055T / 2.8 GHz Prozessor - E143.10 http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=34042&agid=1242&lb

    RAM:
    Corsair XMS3 memory - 4 GB : 2 x 2 GB - E37.97 http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=28068&agid=1193

    HARD DRIVE:
    Samsung SpinPoint F3 Desktop Class HD103SJ - E47.24 http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=28152&agid=689&lb

    GRAPHICS CARD:
    Samsung SpinPoint F3 Desktop Class HD103SJ - E204.99 http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=39505&agid=1004&lb

    TOTAL - E496.53

My alternate choices are for the CPU, motherboard and graphics card.
    CPU: http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?agid=1617&aid=41224&lid=2
    Motherboard: http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp;jsessionid=DD70C912597858423619B637B09E64D0.www2?aid=44935&agid=1601
    Graphics card: http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=39504&agid=1004&lb

Any help regarding compatibility, value, and general performance of these components is appreciated. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

    That's a very expensive 6870.
    There's 6950s for cheaper than that. http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43021

With regards to the intel board, I'd really go for a p67 board (just type p67 into the search bar and sort by price) but they're a bit more expensive.

Did you find out the PSU?

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Why should I go for that board? What advantages does it have over the other one?

I haven't gotten a chance to check out the PSU but I'm 99% sure it's fine. I will check it out either tonight or tomorrow night.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Essentially you can overclock the processor with it. Very easily.
The 2500K is 3.3GHz. You can get an extra 1GHz on that with very little extra heat or danger (even the stock cooling that you get would be sufficient).
30%+ extra performance is not to be scoffed at.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Ok, thanks for all the help so far, I'll keep researching for the moment, but just one more question, would the 6950 be the best graphics card for under 200 euro?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Yeah, the 6950 is very good, or the GTX 560ti, if you want nvidia.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

My Power supple is an LC Power LC6420.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

It looks like an okay PSU for light work, but you're going to need something a bit better if you're thinking of the 6950.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Hehe, damn, that's another 50 quid to the price, haha thanks for letting me know, I was almost certain that the PSU would be ok.

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭I_ENJOY_BATHS

Just another question, does the i5 2500K processor have a fan with it? and is it sufficient enought to keep it cool or will I have to buy a seperate CPU fan, and if I do, how much should I spend on one?

It will say in the description. 'Box' or 'Retail' will come with a stock heatsink, whereas 'Tray' or 'OEM' generally are just the chip.

The stock cooler is pretty good from what I've heard, and you can get up to ~4.2GHz with it. Anything higher than that and you would want something a bit heftier.
