I think the event was brilliant the road signage useless and in most areas non existant.

To have only on bridge open was a joke.

How hard would it have been to have one lane into town on one bridge and out on the other??

While it would be do-able, it could be dangerous for the athletes. This is a top level event, not a Sunday jaunt around cratloe.

IT WAS another bumper weekend for Limerick, with the European Duathlon Championships providing a €1m injection to the local economy.

Some of the world’s top elite athletes were in Limerick for the event - the first time it has been held in Limerick.

During the gruelling two-day event, athletes from 16 countries throughout Europe as well as competitors from Russia and the USA competed in the championships.

Shannon Development assistant chief executive John King said the economic benefits of sport events of this kind for Limerick and the Shannon Region are very significant and are worth in excess of €60m to the local economy every year.

“This event alone has attracted over 800 participants with 600 coming from overseas, providing a significant boost to the local economy of over €1million,” said Mr King.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne said “Limerick is very proud to be hosting so many prestigious sporting events as EU City of Sport 2011 which provide huge benefits to our local economy.”

Three separate events were held over the weekend - the European Age Group Championships on Saturday and the Open Race and the Elite Race, both of which were on yesterday. All events took the form of a Run-Cycle-Run in varying distances, but in immediate succession against the clock. Roads in the city were closed off during the event.

Seemingly the event was a big enough success to merit Limerick bidding for the World Duathalon Championships. Fantastic news for the city and hopefully lessons can be learned to ease the traffic disruption.
