Ferry Lift in the Docks Today

Heard the Galway Harbour Master talking to Keith Finnegan and he is hopeful that the operation to load the ferries onto the cargo ship will happen today, it should take around six hours to complete if it goes ahead.

If anyone is around the docks keep us posted as the docks webcam is stuck on yesterday.

rte radio news just announced that the plans to lift today are cancelled on legal and insurance reasons

but that they have until tomorrow to do it.

so not sure does that mean they are allowed or not. News didnt seem that clear.

The ship has now been 'arrested' and its captain detained.

He's to be brought before the Admiralty Court in Ireland. Seems our own Harbour Master knows nowt about it.

Cargo ship detained in Galway docks

The ship that was due to transport two passenger ferries from Galway to Mauritius has been placed under arrest in Galway docks.

The cargo ship that was due to transport two passenger ferries from Galway to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius has been placed under arrest in Galway docks this afternoon.

The order detaining the 7,000-tonne Danish-registered Thor Gitta was made by the Admiralty Court.

Harbour Master Brian Sheridan said he had not been informed why the ship was being detained, but it would mean the immediate suspension of any plans to transport the two ferries from Galway.

Last week, three men were injured when one of the ferries fell 12 metres from a sling as it was being loaded onto the Thor Gitta in Galway Harbour.

A fresh bid to move the ferries was to have been made early today but it was cancelled because of what were described as 'legal and insurance' issues.

Galway Harbour Master Capt Brian Sheridan said the issues had arisen between the French company which bought the passenger ferries and the Danish cargo ship's agents.

The two passenger ferries had been owned by a well known Galway businessman but were repossessed by a bank and were sold to the French company following a public auction last month.

A first attempt to transport them to Mauritius had to be abandoned when another freighter, the Pantanal, ran aground and was holed during a storm at Rossaveal.

Looks like the Irish Admiralty Marshall is none too happy with the Thor Gita. Insurance matters as a result of last week's debacle, one would imagine.

It'll be another week here at least, unless they can get an expedited hearing in the Admiralty Division of the High Court.

from what iv heard the 3 dudes are taking a case, thats why the ship was arrested.

The most ridiculous thing about what happened last week was that those three dudes were standing on the deck of the ferry while it was being lifted 30 or 40 feet into the air. No doubt the skipper of the Thor Gitta should have asked them to leave the boat before lifting it but it would be so 'Irish' of them to sue when it was their own fault for being on board.

Their job was just to bring the ferry from Rossaveal to Galway and to put the cable around the ferry so that it could be hoisted on board.

The whole thing has been a fiasco, it was a miracle that nobody was badly injured or killed ... which they would have been had the ferry landed on the cargo ship rather than, luckily, back in the water.

This is Ireland so they will probably win the case as the buck stops with the crane operators in this case. If the 3 muppets refused to get off the ferry (if asked) the crane operators should have refused to carry out the lift. We obviously don't know what scenario took place yet!

The other point is these 3 are the guys I have heard they are it says even more about their intelligence to be on a load that is being lifted. They would be used to operating cranes themselves and the regulations involved.

Said on the news tonight that the vessel was arrested as the owners of the two ferries wanted compensation for the damage and apparentely its close to be sorted out. No mention of the three degrees on board

Sharp edge or an already damaged sling probably, you would also presume they would have properly rated and certified slings.

You would also presume they would not have people on the load being lifted

He is the captain of the ship. The buck stops with him - full stop.

He is responsible for his vessel and those being lifted onto his own. As the master of the ship he has a duty of care to and a positive obligation to protect those on either vessel.

The crane operator has the final say on what happens and nobody else, the boss can be screaming and threatening the crane operator but the operator can refuse to carry out the lift if he is not happy with it.

CRANE ALARM HALTS FERRY LOADING AT GALWAY DOCKS


The latest attempt to load two Aran Ferries onto a cargo ship at Galway Docks has been suspended once more.

The operation to transfer the 'Clann Eagle 1' ferry onto the deck of the 'Thor Gitta' Danish cargo ship was halted shortly after 2 o'clock this afternoon.

The ferry was lifted a short distance out of the water but lowered back down again after a safety alarm on one of the cranes sounded.

The Captain of the ship took the decision to halt the operation and sent technicians out to examine the cranes.

Mariners and divers had been working since 7 o'clock this morning to fit the slings around and under the boats.

The Admiralty order arresting the ship was also lifted this afternoon and the ship is now free to sail out of port.

The ferries have been dogged by bad luck since the 'MV Pantanal' ran aground off Casla Bay over two weeks ago, and three men were injured on board the 'Clann na nOileán' ferry last week.

Galway Harbour Master Brian Sheridan says it's now going to be Monday at the earliest before the next attempt will be made to move the two Aran Ferries onto the 'Thor Gitta'.

Meanwhile the original cargo ship which was meant to transport the two ferries, the 'MV Pantanal', sailed out of Galway Bay at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

The Marine Survey Office agreed to allow it leave Irish Waters after an investigation into why it ran aground in Casla Bay over two weeks ago was completed.

It's bound for drydock in Bremerhaven in Germany for repairs and will reach there next Wednesday.

Heard the Harbour Master on radio this morning saying there is a possibility of a large crane that can do the lifting of the ferries coming to Galway from Belfast, that should be interesting to see.
