A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal
Damian Lewis (Billions) and Dominic West (The Affair) are in talks to star in and executive-produce an adaptation of the novel A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal, for Spectrum Originals and UK streamer BritBox, our sister site Deadline reports.

A six-episode Cold War espionage thriller based on Ben Macintyre’s book, A Spy Among Friends “follows the defection of notorious British intelligence officer and KGB double agent Kim Philby (played by West) through the lens of his complex relationship with MI6 colleague and close friend Nicholas Elliott (Lewis). The show examines espionage through their friendship, the fallout of which affects East-West relations to this day.”

The series, adapted by Homeland EP Alexander Cary, is tentatively slated to premiere in fall 2021.

    Candy

Elisabeth Moss to Star as Infamous Killer Candy Montgomery in Miniseries
Elisabeth Moss is about to make a killing: The Emmy winner will star as infamous Texas killer Candy Montgomery in an upcoming limited series, TVLine has learned.

The limited series, tentatively titled Candy, is a UCP production (a division of Universal Studio Group) and is being shopped to premium cable and streaming platforms. Moss plays Candy Montgomery, a Texas housewife in 1980 who “seemingly had it all — loving husband with a good job, a daughter and a son, a nice house in the brand new suburbs — so why did she kill her friend from church with an ax?” the official description asks.

    The Wonder Years

Black Wonder Years, From Lee Daniels, Eyed at ABC; Fred Savage to Direct
Cue up a little Joe Cocker before reading this news: A reboot of The Wonder Years, centered on a Black family, is in the works at ABC, TVLine has learned.

Empire co-creator Lee Daniels is behind the half-hour project, which has scored a pilot production commitment at the network. Set in the turbulent late 1960s — the same era as the original series — it will follow a Black, middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, as it makes sure these are the Wonder Years for them, too.

Original Wonder Years star Fred Savage is set to direct the pilot, and he’ll exec-produce with Daniels and Saladin K. Patterson (Dave, Psych). Patterson will pen the pilot. Neal Marlens, who co-created The Wonder Years, is on board as a consultant for the new iteration.

The first Wonder Years ran on ABC from 1988 to 1993, starring Savage as teenager Kevin Arnold during the late ’60s and early ’70s. Narrated by Daniel Stern as an adult version of Kevin, the dramedy followed his transition from childhood to adulthood in a suburban, middle-class family. The cast also included Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Olivia d’Abo and Jason Hervey as Kevin’s parents and siblings, plus Josh Saviano as Kevin’s best friend, Paul, and Danica McKellar as his neighbor and love interest, Winnie Cooper.

ABC’s Wonder Years commitment comes after the network recently passed on other nostalgia-filled projects: A sequel to the ’80s drama thirtysomething is not moving forward, nor is a reboot of the soapy series Revenge.

They should reboot Everybody Hates Chris as Everybody Loves Chris based on the childhood of one of The Chrises be it Pine, Pratt, Hemsworth or Evans.

Not surprised. A decent story that completely fell off the rails in its last two episodes and had a crap ending.

    Shining Vale
Greg Kinnear has been tapped as the male lead opposite Courteney Cox in Shining Vale, Starz’s horror-comedy pilot from Divorce creator Sharon Horgan and Trial & Error co-creator Jeff Astrof. The half-hour comedy hails from Warner Bros. Television and Lionsgate in association with Astrof’s Other Shoe Productions, Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Written by Astrof from a story by him and Horgan, Shining Vale stems from an idea by Kaplan. The horror-comedy is about a dysfunctional family that moves from the city to a small town into a house in which terrible atrocities have taken place. But no one seems to notice except for Pat (Cox), who’s convinced she’s either depressed or possessed – turns out, the symptoms are exactly the same.

Kinnear will play Terry Phelps, Pat’s (Cox) sweet, sensitive husband. He assumed he was married to the perfect wife until she had an affair with their young handyman, destroying the kitchen island, and maybe his marriage. Ever the optimist, Terry is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his family together, including intensive couples therapy and cashing in all his assets to buy an Old Victorian house in the suburbs of Connecticut, trading his 12-minute commute for a 90-minute train ride into the city. Despite his brave face and can-do spirit, it is clear that he has some deep-seated resentment, which occasionally peeks out as rage. Especially when his wife tells him she believes their new house is haunted. Terry’s challenge will be to ride out whatever is going on with Pat, without completely losing his own mind in the process.

Horgan and Mountford executive produce via Merman alongside Astrof through his Other Shoe Productions and Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor. Dearbhla Walsh is set to direct and executive produce the pilot.

    When Heroes Fly

Apple Orders Straight-To-Series Remake Of Israeli Drama ‘When Heroes Fly’ From ‘The Hurt Locker’s Mark Boal
The Hurt Locker writer and producer Mark Boal is adapting Israeli drama When Heroes Fly for Apple.

The streamer has handed the series, which will be known as Echo 3, a straight-to-series ten-part order.

It will be produced by Keshet Studios and Apple and will be set in South America.

The series follows Amber Chesborough, a brilliant young scientist, the emotional center of a small American family. When she goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband — two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts — struggle to find her in a layered, personal drama, set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war.

It is based on Keshet’s series When Heroes Fly, created by Omri Givon and inspired by the eponymous novel by Amir Gutfreund. It will be shot with English and Spanish dialogue.

Boal will serve as showrunner alongside co-showrunner and executive producer Jason Horwitch (Berlin Station). Keshet Studios’ Peter Traugott serves as executive producer alongside Marc Boal, Jason Horwitch, Stan Wlodkowski, Omri Givon, Eitan Mansuri, Jonathan Doweck, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman and Karni Ziv.

This marks Keshet’s second Apple drama following its production Suspicion, starring Uma Thurman and based on Amit Cohen and Maria Feldman’s False Flag.

Echo 3 was commissioned by Angélica Guerra, Head of Latin American programming, who’s part of Morgan Wandell’s global team.
