Beauty and the Best

The long-gestating Gaston & LeFou Beauty and the Beast prequel series is a go. Disney+ has officially greenlighted Beauty and the Best (working title), an eight-episode limited musical series, a prequel to the 2017 live-action film. The movie’s Luke Evans and Josh Gad are reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou (Louie) in the series, joined by newcomer Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar) as the female lead, Louie’s stepsister, Tilly.

Beauty and the Beast was developed and written by Gad and Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, with the trio serving as executive producers/co-showrunners.

Set in the iconic kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance, the series will follow Gaston (Evans) and LeFou (Gad) as they set off with LeFou’s step-sister, Tilly (Middleton), after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

Tony Award-nominated director Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed) will direct the first episode.

EGOT Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who scored both the 1991 and 2017 Beauty and the Beast movies, is writing the soundtrack of the series, with lyrics for the first episode by Oscar-nominee Glenn Slater (Tangled). Tommy and Menken are also executive producing, with Evans producing.

Reboot Starring Jon Bernthal Gets Showtime Series Order

Showtime has given a series order to American Gigolo, its long-in-the-works series adaptation, with Ford v. Ferrari and The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal attached to star and produce. The project hails from David Hollander (Ray Donovan) Paramount TV Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Paramount TV originally teamed with Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the film noir classic starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton, to explore a TV series adaptation in 2014. The project was set up for development at Showtime in 2016 with Neil LaBute as writer. It has since gone through multiple incarnations. The project, with Hollander as writer & EP and Bernthal starring, received a pilot order at Showtime in March 2020.

In a star-making turn, the 1980 movie featured Gere as Julian Kaye, a male escort in Los Angeles.

Written and directed by Hollander, the new American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film. Bernthal plays Julian Kaye, who is introduced 15 years after he’s been arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry, while seeking the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love, played by Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire).

Cast also includes Rosie O’Donnell (SMILF) as homicide Detective Sunday, Lizzie Brocheré (Falling Water) as sex work ring heiress Isabelle, Gabriel LaBelle (Dead Shack) as a younger version of Julian named Johnny and Leland Orser (Ray Donovan) as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire. Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show) guest stars as Lorenzo, Julian’s best friend and mentor.

Yet another series that disappears into oblivion with no ending. When it first came out, I remember reading that it was the new "Lost", well it's certainly lost now.

Highway To Heaven Reboot

An updated version of Highway to Heaven is coming to the small screen. Lifetime has greenlighted event movie series Highway To Heaven, a modern take on the classic Michael Landon TV series, starring Grammy winner Jill Scott (First Wives Club) in a gender-switching lead role, and Barry Watson (The Loudest Voice). Scott also serves as an executive producer.

Scott stars as new angel Angela who comes down to Earth to help people in crisis. Landon played the male version of the character in the original series, the angel Jonathan, who was sent to Earth to help people in need. Watson portrays Junior High School principal Bruce to whom Angela reveals her true identity.

Cast also includes Ben Daon (The Astronauts), Robert Moloney (Riverdale, You Me Her) and Ashley Ross (A Series of Unfortunate Events).

In cooperation with Cindy Landon and the Michael Landon Estate, the movies are inspired by the highly-rated ’80s drama that ran for five seasons and more than 100 episodes from 1984 to 1989 on NBC. With a constant theme throughout of love and kindness, the reboot aims to inspire hope and community as it addresses contemporary social and emotional issues, this time with a female angel as the anchor of the movie series.

Annie Ilonzeh is set as the lead in NBC drama pilot Getaway, from The Blacklist duo John Davis and John Fox and Universal TV, a division of Universal Studios Group.

Ilonzeh’s Tessa Carrillo is a physically tough Army medical vet who at 18 put her career dreams on hold after her parents died to take care of her younger sister, Grace. Jack Huston is leading the latest take on The Count of Monte Cristo.

The Fargo star, who recently wrapped production on House of Gucci and is set as the male lead in Amazon drama series Expats, is to star in and write the package, which is now being taken out to buyers by Shadowhunters producer Constantin Film.

The project, which has been in development for a while, will see Huston play Nicolas Cristo, a man broken, betrayed and locked away for over a decade, fighting to bring justice to a world even more cruel and corrupt than the one that was taken from him.

The twist for the latest adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel? It will be set in Asia and the U.S.

Interview With The Vampire

Lestat and Louis are headed for the small screen after AMC greenlighted a series adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire.

The cable network has ordered an eight-part series based on the book, which was famously turned into a 1994 movie starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

This comes after AMC Networks acquired the rights to 18 of Rice’s books last year.

The company is looking to turn Rice’s collection of novels, which include the Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches series, into a franchise with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul producer Mark Johnson overseeing the rollout. Johnson, who has an overall agreement with AMC Studios, will take the lead on the universe.
