^ good job all round ! - enjoy your new car :D

I was looking for a used car, looked at the distributer website (yes BMW), nothing that quite matched what I wanted, so I rang two dealers in dublin to say here's what I want (couple of specific requirements), if you get one in feel free to call me here are my details. First one, sales guy I was put through to said your best bet is to check our website regularly.

I mean in fairness I'm offering him up a proactive lead on a sale and he didn't even want to take my details.

Second one - a lot more cop on, pushed into a couple of cars he had that were close but not quite want I wanted...very good approach led into discussion on price and I'm going to test drive one of his tomorrow.

thanks, yes , car is really good, happy with that. But for used vw golf, we will need to take finance. If i would have enough money, i would go to N.I., or uk, and would get exactly that car what I want. Reloc8 .. try N.I or UK stock, it could be cheaper as well.

I think at least some of the blame lies with the staff themselves rather than management. At the end of my first day working for a main dealer I took home brochures for all the cars I sold, and learnt the prices, specifications, available options & option prices. Even this basic product knowledge is well beyond all but a very few Irish car salespeople. Why? Because they just aren't bothered.

Maybe so but the DP should spot this and sort it out fairly lively!

I started selling cars at the age of 18, fresh from school and not a clue !! I was given the best possible start at a dealership in Cork (family run business) and did'nt sell my first car on my own for at least the first 10 months ! I read a previous post saying that its not managements fault that a salesman cannot sell and that is pure BS tbh, if a salesman refuses to do his/her job in a correct manner than it is up to the dealer principal/ sales manager to stand over them and advise them on every single sale.
I found most training courses to be a long drawn out americanised waste of time, hands on experience and face to face dealings are the only training anyone will need.
One particular dealership in Cork turned over 63 staff in 2008 ?? Why?? because they paid peanuts and got monkey's.

Recently went to one of the VW MSL dealers in Dublin. Wont say which one. Was going to trade in my Golf for one 2 years newer but had the new shape etc..Had a look outside at the car i was interested in and stood around for a while but nobody came out. Went into showroom and went up to sales guy. Not very friendly at all. got keys for car and opened it up. never offered test drive or anything. He Had a look at my car and made about 2 phonecalls not to mention he answered his phone about 3 times at the other car.

The car i was looking at i knew straight away was about E5,000 overpriced compared to exact same on the net etc...I thought this been an overpriced garage he'd offer me more than average on my car and thats how it worked. Basically he wanted about 7,000 to change which in reality should have been about 4k. He wouldnt budge at all and i even told him the car was way overpriced, but he basically said we dont do deals in garages like this. even though i know the car had been there for at least 4 months. He was the most un-business like person i ever met and walked off. Are these so called 'posh' garages like Ballsbridge and Grange just used of people comming in and and changing there cars without even asking the price? wouldnt mind but my golf is from Ballsbridge motors but bought it private a couple of years back.?

You got a crazy deal up front though if you got a new 530d for 35k in 2007, thought they were closer to 60k back then?

I remember my Dad was looking to trade in a 2004 Fiesta in 2008, he was interested in a Honda Jazz but a certain Honda dealer in North Dublin refused to take it as a trade in, his exact words were "I wouldn't have that on my forecourt", the oul fella told him to go f himself and walked off.

In fairness those Fiesta's are horrible! :D But still, he should have offered a trade in price, then move the Fiesta on to another trade place.

It's true, anything that sells should be traded by people in the trade! That's what being in the trade means... you trade stuff...

I took one of the first lci 530d m-sports for a test drive in 2007. Think the only options were leather and Bluetooth and that was over 93 grand.

A 530d did not cost €34,578 in 2007 (A 520d was in the region of €60k) (As others have now pointed out!!!)

The current market value of a '07 530d is not the fault of the dealers. People do not want to spend more than €400 on motor tax now, unless it's a VAG 1.9 Tdi

Changed my car recently to BMW 520D (2007) and couldn't fault the salesman. (Conlans Limerick)
He made sure to follow up at every opportunity etc and replies to any queries I might have via email for followup.
Been offered coffee every time I was out there as well as free internet and even offered an ipad to pass away the time while waiting for a light to be changed (angel eye-pain in the ass to change it on post lci models).
So excellent service and had the choice of test driving any car in the lot if I was interested....really must take that 6 series for a spin :D

At the time I was changing my car I also inquired at another BMW garage in WestMeath I think it was (Colm Quinn) and again excellent service.
I'm down in Limerick and they even offered to have a salesman drive down the car I was looking at to my workplace for me to test drive. Can't fault them on this as it was easily a 90 min drive.

Worst I've even see was Hogans on the dock road limerick...really awful service...this was back in 2005 when I was spending about 30k on a brand new car..needless to say they're out of business now with that attitude.

If it's a demo it'll have miles on it, if it's used, then another 150 kilometres won't make a pick of difference to it.
Quinn's in Athlone are good alright, better pricewise than Conlans too.
Worst in Limerick are those flutes in Enterprise cars on the Dock road. Not that I'd buy any of their rough crap anyway.

OP... in days long gone (2007) I had a heap of cash saved to buy a new car. I wanted an Alfa 159 like crazy.

I walked into the dealership and asked to buy one. Simple? Not so....

I was met with indifference to be honest!

It was a Saturday (the only day I can get off work). There was some 'big' match on the TV so the sales guy (aged around 10 years old with a savage hangover) said they had no cars available for test drive as the weekday staff had them out. He also said I'd be waiting 'a while if I ordered'.. Fine. He waved his hand in the general direction of the reception desk and said there was printed price lists with options and then made reference to the match that was being played live.....

I walked out...... and bought one elsewhere.

Most of those car dealers employees have never known what it really meant to work for a sale.(I wouldn't call them salesmen)
For nigh on 10 years everyone just walked in pointed at what they wanted and got it on tick.
How do you learn the fine art of selling if you don't use that skill?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭U.P.O.

In 2009 (one of the worst years for car sales) i went to buy a new Audi A5 - cash, no trade in (sold my own privately). Youd think they'd jump at someone wanting to spend €60k on a car with no trade in - especially as sales were so bad that year.

Went to O'Learys of Lissarda in Cork. Have never met a more useless salesman in all my life. He sat there yawning and stretching the whole time in front of me. Must have been out the night before ! Was telling me a whole host of information that i knew for a fact was wrong. He told me the engine i wanted wasnt available yet even though i knew of someone who had it already ! When i pointed this out to him he said hed look into it for me and ring me back. To this day i still havent heard from the guy.

The A5s werent long out at the time and there was a rumor of a steering problem on the earlier ones. When i asked for a test drive to see about this his answer was - word for word "ah i wouldnt worry about that" ! Spending €60k a car and i shouldnt worry about that ! Never got the test drive then either. Was i supposed to buy it without driving it ?

Ended up going to Blackwater Motors even though the delivery charge was more. Very helpful guy. Very knowlegable and anything he didnt know he said hed find out and get back to me on and was back to me first thing the next morning with an answer. First time i went up with just a basic enquiry he told me to "take the car". Said there was half a tank of petrol in it and we close at 5:00..... Was always offered coffee, hed remember your name next time you came up which might be weeks later, offered to take the car for a spin again even though you've already ordered. Got a thank you card and free golf lesson voucher off them a few weeks later, got a courtesy call to see that all was going well etc... Very nice guys.

As for O'Learys of Lissarda ill never go there again. I feel sorry for the owner too. Hes probably a decent guy and no has no idea that the idiot of a sales guy he has is losing him customers. I often felt like ringing the owner and telling him. Im sure the owner is a nice decent guy and doesnt desrve that. Ah well. Rant over. You can tell it still irks me after 3 years :D

There are still some decent dealers left, normally they are tiny prefabs not big glass palaces.

frank keanes told me to 'go look at carzone' when I went in to enquire about a 2nd hand X5

Nissan liffey valley had 0 interest in me even looking at a navara

But The merc commercial centre on the long mile road, monasterevin motors, blanchardstown 4x4 - none of them very fancy, but all very helpful.

O'Learys Lissarda lost the Audi Sales contract in late 2008, so the guy was leading you on. Stories like the above probably explain why they lost it :)

O'Learys must have fired the useless sales guy, I had a very positive experience there about 10 months ago, one of the very few dealers in the country that I was actually happy with.
Maybe the recession finally copped them on.

i went into Frank Keanes this weekend. They were relaunching their new site in Blackrock (old Maxwell Motors, now re-branded Frank Keane Blackrock). They had the brand new BMW M5 there which hasn't even been launched in this country yet. They must have pulled a serious stroke to get their hands on it, although i suspect that being the original importer and distributor of BMW that they still have strong roots and relations with the factory.
When i got there i was greeted by a salesman who was very polished, new the product and offered all the usual things you would expect from a 1st class dealer. Unfortunately they didnt have what i was looking for in their Blackrock dealership so i went to the Naas Road Branch and likewise was introduced by the lady receptionist to a very diligent salesman who managed to take money from me after 90 minutes.
its a pity that Eric wasnt dealing with the same sales guys as i had beacuse they really managed to impress me.

Rock on Frank Keane andgoodluck with the new Volkswagen garage

Right lads ,seriously thinking of changing my motor bmw 520d.
went to ballsbridge motors last week to see about changing for a passat cc.
i went into the showroom had to ask for a salesman as nobody approached me after 5 mins.after i enquired about a passat and was told "to go out side and look at one-it should be open !" he says-he didnt follow me out or offer a test drive,
after looking over the car i went back in and he took my details and said he would get back to me-still waiting.
Today i was in joe duffys looking at an insignia again had to ask for help.
again "there are two outside",no introduction ,no test drive and no details taken. i went outside looked at the two cars and left.
now my point is -are these people serious about business. i know im not buying a gallardo but a 40k car is pretty substanial in these times i feel and with dearlerships falling all around the country ,is it any wonder if this is the service they offer.
have these multi dearlerships got to big to care about the wee man anymore.
with the rate of car sales slowing for march and the scrappage going to end in june (another inflated bubble )surely these guys need to fight for every penny.
i `ll go to a smaller country dealer with my business i think.
was this just a bad experience or do you guys feel the same?
    thxs paul

Frank Keane always offers a great service. My father bought a new Audi there last year, even though they are a main BMW dealer. He went to an Audi dealer in Deansgrange and couldnt deal with them because of their attitude towards customers.
I drove by the Longmile Road yesterday and it looks like Frankk Keane is opening a new VW dealership there where the Opel garage used to be.
I'd go to them if your still in the market. The VW CC is a way better motor than the Insignia and will hold its value better

My Friend bought a new A5 in 2010 THERE and has had lot of problems which he had to bring the car back for.. He had the opposite experience than you had with the aftersales side and the level of customer service that he received was disgraceful. The sales person was very helpful and tried to sort things out and was embarrassed over the whole thing but he has had at least 7 visits and all of them he was giving the run around when told he would be contacted which they never did , they left parts that were never refitted after the repair in the car and when he challenged them over it they said it was packaging from the new part which they then realised afterwards that it was actually off the car.

Ha brilliant, in truth the car industry in this country has had it very easy, both during the boom and subsequently with the scrappage scheme. I experienced similarly disaffected disinterested sales people when i was looking to buy a car 3 years ago. At the time the recession was just kicking into gear and car sales rooms were shedding staff, yet I wasnt approached once in any of the show rooms i went to, both large and small. I really think car sales people have forgotten how to sell. Both during the boom and latterly with the scrappage scheme the cars were selling themselves, the 'sales people' were literally only needed to put through the paper work, now that the good times are over sales people in car fourcourts couldnt be bothered. Personally I am delighted to see the end to the scrappage scheme, I thought it was crazy that the irish tax payer was footing the bill for subsidising sales of Toyota / BMW / AUDI and thus increasing their profits and all to be seen to support irish jobs !!! what rubbish.

I'm with you there. The number of glass-fronted car dealers is just as unsustainable as the property-market was and the scrappage scheme was really just plugging the hole in the dam, appeasing the SIMI lobby group.

It's funny reading above what people consider good customer service - a newspaper, coffee machine, childrens play area... Your car is quarantined away and you're left pacing around like an expectant father. What a load of Celtic Tiger nonesense! Most likely the mechanics working on it are inexperienced, (cheap) young lads... I'm moving back towards good indys who have some credentials, who can explain things properly and where you can see the work been done on the car and the parts being added if needs be.

Yeah but most of these lovely dealerships offer a full service for 99euro. Come'on, they top up your window washer with washing up liquid, press the button on the dash to reset the 'service due' message, wash your car quickly, have it tested by a fully qualified 17 year old boy racer mechanic, and they'll even give you a lift. Credit due where credits due 'like'.

The scrappage scheme was self-financing, it didn't cost the taxpayer a penny. If anything, it saved the taxpayer a fortune.

How on earth do you figure that one out?

Look at the car sales' figures before scrappage, after scrappage, compare with the sales during the scrappage, and do the maths yourself!
