Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone recommend a data recovery programme for a borked external HDD?

I used a free one a couple of months ago and it did the job, but I've since upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and never bothered backing up anything in the process.

Google search history isn't giving me anytihng useful.

Testdisk is great free utility for recovering lost partitions

When it gets to the point that it see the lost partition, you have to "write" to recover it.

If you do recover your data BACKITUP!

There are many data recovery threads on this forum. Try photorec/r-studio/getdataback/recover http://www.recoverdatatools.com/windows-data-recovery.html(not the same as recuva)

This isn't a plug for the linked item.. i'm just lazy ATM

edit : some programs above are not free.

I have used RIP (Recovery is Possible) Linux in the past. Some seriously powerful tools for data recovery. You can run it from a live cd.

I suggest you save an image of your hard drive to another external drive before attempting data recovery & keep this image untouched. This is crucial, as the first image you get of your drive may be your last chance to get anything off it.

Then use a copy of the image of your hard drive to attempt data recovery on.

Although tutorials on this are thin on the ground so I used the instructions for Ubuntu Rescue Remix to help me on my way, so it might be more straight forward to just use the Ubuntu Rescue Remix live CD.

Here's the tutorial for using Ubuntu Rescue Remix:
