Based on info gleaned from this forum, I sent my parents into Currys in Navan, with the following request:

"We would like a TV with a Saorview tuner plus a DVB-T2 tuner to receive the Freeview HD signal from the north"

    They hadn't a clue.

Nor had a shop in Kells.

So they bought a Toshiba, which I presume will receive the SD channels from the north.

That reads like they were looking for a tv with two seperate tuners, I wouldnt know where you would find one of those either.

Samsung, LG or Sony all have versions that are both Saorview and Freeview HD.

The BBC web page for The Magic Box says "BBC One only on Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland HD" - explains a lot, probably be available at the start of next week.

Past 60 years of tv in HD, that's good going. How did they manage that?

Good spot! Gives the game away, and now that the UTVHD feed is on the Intelsat distribution feed to the DTT transmitters, it means that Freeview HD NI will be regionalised on Wednesday. Also minimises the need for downrange retunes, given that Wednesday is going to be complicated enough.

I don't know about that, anything I have read about this from the BBC seems to suggest it will be later in the year or early next year.
If it was going to happen next week I think there would have been an announcement of some sort, remember this will not only affect BBC NI but also BBC Scotland and BBC Wales.

If its on the BBC NI web site its official. Also BBC1 Scotland:

And the commercial contracts are in place, note the timeline for BBC1NI HD:

TSL wins BBC Nations HD contract
    10 October, 2012

Systems integrator TSL has won the contract to upgrade BBC Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales’ playout operations to HD.

It means that each nation’s channel will be able to broadcast to national schedules, showing true HD and up-scaled programmes.

“The overall challenge with this project is the amount of planning involved”, said TSL director of systems David Gunn.

“During live playout, we’ll be replacing sections of SD circuitry and interfacing new HD systems around each of the nations’ existing infrastructures.”

TSL said that key aspects of the upgrade at each site will include an additional channel of Miranda’s Colossus automated playout system, Pixel Power Logovision graphics engines, Harmonic Mediacentre servers and Snell Sirius routers.

Axon kit will provide originated Dolby surround and upmixing stereo to 5.1, together with new HD video and surround sound audio monitoring equipment.

TSL built the original BBC Nations SD playout facilities in Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast in 2007.

The first HD upgrade is due to take place at BBC Northern Ireland later this year, with the project due for completion by the first quarter of next year.

I suspect that will be via Astra 2F to reduce the overspill footprint.

I've entered these parameters but get no signal.

I've entered these parameters but get no signal.

    They are wrong:

10847V, SR 23000, FEC 2/3. Only Freesat boxes can tune them, Sky boxes can't. Its service 6943.

    http://www.lyngsat.com/Astra-1N.html

    Transponder 50.

Only visit DS on the odd occasion these days so I didn't notice. Also there is the outside possibility that BBC One NI HD could launch on satellite before terrestrial, but it makes a bit more sense for it to be scheduled on the final day of DSO, if that's what happens.

Yes, usually in testing period when they start playing the correct 7 day EPG data out on satellite you know they are getting ready to go. According to the satellite transponder websites (lyngsat, kingofsat) that second BBC1HD (which we now know is going to be BBC1NIHD) has actually been quietly testing for several weeks!
