Thanks, OK, cool, didn't see that. Can't see anything in the mod forum so it must have been discussed by PM.

You may have misread my post, I don't allow a 'for sale' thread with discussion, I only permit a post to adverts.ie where the unit it up for sale. It works well as it brings the attention of the local community to a sale that may interest them.

It works in the Airsoft forum...

Why not have a sticky'd thread, one post per user, no discussion, template to be used?

    They were not being ignorant.

    They just are that way.

Some forums have very specialised, specific and legal constraints on the buying and selling of stuff related to the particular topic.

Taking the Airsoft example, we need to know that anything being sold is under the 1 joule legal limit for an Airsoft gun. There has also been a moral decision to make sure that no kids are being sold these items. It's far more difficult to police this side of buying and selling on Adverts.ie and even now with the site having been relaunched and completely rebuilt, I wouldn't see Airsoft buying and selling working out.

On the other hand, you have something like Cycling For Sale - this was started because the folks there were buying and selling highly specialised parts and bikes and their listings on Adverts were filled with people who didn't seem to understand that a carbon fibre road racing bike is worth actually worth €2000 despite the special offer "racing" bike you saw at Halfords last week :) There was a lot of time being wasted and people getting frustrated and since there was a lot of buying and selling within the group anyway, we decided to go ahead with the sub-forum for it.

So with all that in mind, is there something specific in Motorbikes that would mean it would require extra care? Aside from the fact that Boardsies like to do business with other Boardsies I mean and of course the buying and selling of motor vehicles has it's own legal requirements.

I like the idea of a thread just for listings items and a link to the ad on Adverts or DoneDeal or wherever it's listed - like a community notice board. We have similar things in some of the Sports forums where they can post about up coming workshops or events. I would suggest that this definitely be the first port of call for the Motorbikes people.

    Hi Dav
Thanks for the reply. Cuddlesworth, Kamakazi and I are all involved in Airsoft so we understand the reasons behind its specialist sub forum. As for a reason that specialist stuff should be allowed inthread in the motorbike forum; well it's exactly like the cycling forum, you can buy protective gear in lidil etc for tens of euro and you can get the "same" stuff second hand for hundreds also some twenty year d bikes are better than some five year old bikes and the main thing is that you can claearly divide bikes into two catagorys : 1 being bikes owned by enthuasiasts who service meticulously who post up pics every time they improve it who constantly talk about keeping their bikes perfect or better than perfect

Or 2 being bikes that are bought, mistreated by owners with no mechanical empethy and who abuse their bike till it gets tired and old feeling and then polish it up and sell it to the next clown.

We are kinda going the other way with things now though, instead of using Boards because Adverts wasnt what we wanted it to be, we've taken the view that Adverts needed a huge overhaul (and it recently got it) and move stuff to it when its good and ready.
Ideally all those sub forums and threads will eventually simply link to Adverts to bring the sale of those items to the communities attention.

    DeV.

This seems to be a problem across the board with adverts. Put anything specialised up and you're almost guaranteed to have some window licker/chancer/fiscally wise person/tool[delete as applicable] come in with a stupidly low ball offer. Which if it happened in the cycling for sale section would be noted by a mod. Not just with specialised stuff either. It does put people off. I dunno how ye could go about reducing that though.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Silly offers like that are generally removed as threadspoiling (provided they get reported).

We can't actively look for it on adverts - it's just too busy - but every single report gets looked at and replied to by either a mod or Eddie or both.

sounds just like motorbikes: I mean, have you seen the legislation on IBT/licences/power restrictions.............it's a minefield out there !

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

i think it's down to the mods in the motorbike forum to agree to take on the work policing a for sale thread on a 1 post(with link to adverts) per sale basis and no discussion.
if they are willing to, trial it give it a go, too much work shut it down.

i like the idea of seeing a community sale rather than a randomer.
a guy in here with a load of posts and a history is less likely to shaft you ( you would hope!)

in the past i have had great experience with adverts but am more wary now of anyone not a regular boards contributor, i think it is this concern we share here.
