Concerns over Andy Carrolls pace prove unfonded!

Looks like his ex teammate was correct about a certain Manchester citys players pace, or lack of....

Ashley Cole is pretty nippy alright, wonder would Kalou not match him for speed though. I would have thought Paulo Ferriera was Chelsea's slowest player personally. Fit Frankie fair play to him.

You've gotta feel crap when you realise the keepers in your squad are faster or fitter than you.

Pepe Reina is definitely not the slowest in the Liverpool team, so I wouldn't believe these figures at all.

Mikel has to be the slowest. :D

Chris Smalling fastest for United and Fabio slowest?

I remember Chris making a break in one match and was surprised how fast he was, it was a pity Nani didn't release the ball to him.

    Fabio I'm surprised at.

Reads like a load of tosh really.

It's also strange how loads of the fastest players clock in at 22.37mph.

Horrible article, Walcott is obviously fastest at Arsenal and Gyan is not the slowest player at Sunderland by a long shot, probably one of the fastest. This is like the one a few years ago which had Sol Campbell 2nd fastest in the league ahead of Ronaldo and more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

    Wilshere faster than Walcott?

Surprised Essien is down as the slowest though

On Soccer AM this morning Stoke players said Etherington was the fastest player at the club. So they at least got one right.

Its only a bit of light hearted entertainment.

Well it is published in the Mail on Sunday. Not in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine.

The distance traveled by each player is probably pretty accurate.

Accurate yeah, but that means fuck all when talking about fitness to be honest.

Of course not. However, it does give you an idea of who works hard in a game.

Doesnt mean anything - just that he was slowest in a recent match. He was obviously told to not push forward etc...

Yeah, but generally midfielders will cover the most ground in a game.

His speed is nearly as high as the fastest though, so Sunderland are zooming all over the pitch

The paper should have taken one look at the results and pulled the article. Survey fail.

I thought it was common knowledge that Aaron Lennon was by far the fastest player in the PL ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

    This article is beyond retarded.
Why is Balotelli highlighted if Carroll is the fastest, and they focus on talking about how fast Jack Wilshere...

Covering the most distance doesn't make you the fittest. They pulled these figures out of their arse or they are taken from one game.

Oh Pep Reina is slow.... probably because he have to run on the day.

    Dire article.

Next we'll see that kyrgiakos is faster than Ashley young!

How did they "calculate" all these speeds/distances etc?

  • Registered Users Posts: 833 ✭✭✭omniscient_toad

I guess they're measuring speed as absolute top speed a player reaches during a game which seems pretty pointless. A 100m sprinter usually hits top speed at about 50/60 metres, no wonder a few goalies show as the slowest, how often are they going to go full pelt over a long enough distance to hit top speed? Acceleration is probably what most people would notice during a match and think "wow he's fast", a player is going to need a quick burst of initial speed far more often than a good top speed over 50 metres.

They put pedometres in their shinguards of course

I like how most the fastest figures are ~22.35/37. Wilshere faster than Walcott and just 0.02mph slower than Bale?

The article says that EA measured the top speed from just the most recent game.

If Carroll is the fastest player at Liverpool then they need to get some pace in pretty fast.

Have my doubts about this. As if the fcuking Mail have timed, or even have access to the times, of every player in the premiership.

    Load of arbitrary nonsense tbqh.

The most useless stat in the history of stats is the 'Distance player has travelled during a game stat', it gives Sky pundits a hard-on but tells you nothing about a player's ability to play the game - an utterly useless and irrelevant stat.

Literally all the fastest is 22.37 mph.And Essien is way faster than people like Paulo. If its only based on their last game its a pretty s***e bunch of stats

Who cares if these things are even accurate? In football it's rarely the top speed a player hits or his pace over 100 metres that matters.

I recall Gilberto was slow off the mark but once he got going he was absolutely lightning - Henry quick. Trouble is he needed virtually the entire pitch for his pace to be any use. Good for counter-attacking from corners and not a lot else.
