Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. First of its kind in Clonmel, just a bit of a laugh for the kids. It all seemed to go well and the weather held off long enough for all the young vamps, werewolf and mummies to make their way to the car park at Mary St. for a bit of breakdance and street performance. :D

Yeah,I passed today it was open.I had passd a few times and the shutter's were down.I was passing a few days last week, the shutters were down.He usually is closed on Thursday, which takes me back to another tradition, when the shops used to close on a Thursday...I was told today that the 2euro shop beside where the Present Time shop was in market place,is having a closing down sale??????????

Dont know but he must be in business well over 30 years. I would say retirement may be an option soon although it is just as likely that they will have to wheel him out feet first with a screwdriver firmly stuck in his hand in another 30 years.

Yes thats true its closing too as is the boutique in O'Connell St I think called Glamorous, its really awful to see so many small businesses closing, I know its all down to the ridiculously high rents and rates.

Correct Davejac Kilkenny is one of them. Kickham seems to be only one barracks on a list of others facing closure.

Its impact will be felt for sure thoughout the town as well as the families being directly effected lets not forget about the beleagued businesses and traders of the town that have been dealing with the barracks for countless numbers of years and rely on them heavily for their trade not to mention all the other Civvie empoyees of the barracks. This is just another kick in the teeth and I reckon that we're going to see more businesses closing their doors as a direct effect of the closure, a point I fear that touts has missed altogether I reckon.

Touts you have a right to your opinion this is after all an open forum and as to your point about the hospital I totally agree you are correct. But..

As to the industries that surround Clonmel, which do you refer too? Is it Boston who rattled recently but settled everyone's cough with a cheque for millions recently.. Said mayor reckons he had a hand in it. Did he f*ck. Is it Abbott who advertised and took on 95 people with the majority from outside the town! MSD down the round also just opened their new R&D extension worth X million yoyos as well. All three Company's are Pharma/medical devices and American and were enticed and suckled for the tax incentives that this Country offers but lets not forget what happened when Seagate upped sticks and swanned off shall we.

If I was to have a bitch about "local Industries" I'd be more put out about the likes of company's such as JRE who just folded with the loss of 147 employees and what does the powers that be concentrate on? The latest extension to the waste of space white elephant that is the Showgrounds.. of course that's what clonmel needs, more takeaways, Womens fashion boutiques and bloody €2 discount stores.
As to your description of what the Army does and Kickham Barracks's, how did you put it "a few lads running around playing soldiers input to the local economy of Clonmel smacks of ill informed drivel and truthfully a very narrow minded outlook. Either that or your just trying to cause an argument, which is it?
I agree with your regarding the barracks but Please dont complain about new boutiques and takeaways, both will create employment, and women are more likely to stay in Clonmel to shop rather than going to Kilkenny or Waterford or where ever which will do the town good and as for takeaways most of them in town are robbers and its good to have a choice dont you think.

dont know if it was mentioned already, the other day, I saw a 'CLOSING DOWN' sign on the furniture store Fitzgerald & Nash in Irishtown.

    more jobs presumably gone!!

ITs for real this time, I think the flooding over the past few years has helped with his decision. Building is for sale and everthing within. Sad to see it go, I bought a lot of stuff there over the years. Modern cheap furniture just doesnt last like it did, but most of the stuff I bought there is still going strong!!

My post about Stada is correct.i work there!....

Hopefully new owners to be confirmed in Jan but if the sale falls through the present owners will discuss redundancy terms in March for eventual closure in 1/2 years. There is only 1 interested party,no more eggs in the basket!

Can anyone tell me what the prices are like in Iceland?
I only discovered today that they had opened in Clonmel and I'd love to have a look.
Is the stuff marked in sterling?( How much would a pound item be in Euro?)

The prices are very cheap and priced in Euro. :) I would compare the store to Lidl and Aldi.

Ye can say goodbye to the council too, Seeing as Clonmel already has its own borough council it seems likely to stay in Nenagh after the county is reunited.

Some of the stuff is quiet good value. Ie. 3 ltr coca cola €2, deep pan pepperoni pizzas €1. There are other good bargains to be got there but I just don't have the prices in my head. 2 ltr cartons of milk and bread are good value. Some of the stuff marked £1 was €1.50, others not such a bad exchange rate. I've had a pizza from there and it was as good as a goodfellas one. It's well worth a few mins looking around. I found that the non frozen items weren't as good value.

I haven't ventured in because I'm slightly afraid that Kerry Katona will appear from nowhere and start throwing frozen onion bhajis at me.

Hearing lots of talk that the food isn't good. I've had some myself and while it pains me to say it, it was not nice as expected. My entire family agrees with me. If you're willing to look past that for the good value (at times) then it might be OK for you.

Any update on the free wifi that was meant to be coming into the town centre?

I thought it was scheduled to be kicked off in September, has it been sidelined due to lack of funds?

Nothing yet! looking doubtful with everything that has been going on recently in Clonmel.

Its been confirmed - Dawn Fresh Foods to start letting the staff go. First to go will be 26 casual staff then another 40 offered redundancy and as usual all this just before christmas. The people of Fethard must be in shock.

I was down town earlier to get a recycling sticker for my bag, and the shop keeper told me the council was gone and there was a new company collecting recycling.
I bought the bags, and they're from Cork City Council.

    What happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭tippspur

The Council gave up the refuse collecting a couple of months ago,a company called greenIreland has taken over the Council customers since about the end of October(you mustn't leave out much stuff;)It's a wonder they didn't call to tell you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,514 ✭✭✭Nollog

I'm not registered or anything, I just leave out a bag of recycling every couple of months in a bag with a sticker.

Surprised this happened back in October and I didn't hear about it.

The local Councilors weren't told it was happening either, needless to say they were not too happy about it.

Local Councillors were briefed on the issue months before it happened but they weren't told exactly who won the tender(for obvious reasons) for the service until it was jointly announced by the Council and the company.
It was a great excuse for a rant for them.
Interestingly only one of them gave the actual reason why the Council got out of the service i.e the locals deserted the system.
Time will tell if the new company will be cheaper than the Council.

The council or corporation in this case are not allowed to run a refuse collection service at a loss where there are private companies around to do the job.As Vizzy points out the public deserted the corporation so there was no choice in the matter.

Why wouldnt people desert when they had to pay 300 euro, and then had to pay monthly for the bin lift. The 300 more than covers a private company,at the moment.

I'm a bit baffled myself. Someone from Local heroes came in to my shop on Friday of last week and started to talk to me about it. I got the distinct impression that they weren't really on top of their game about the whole thing. It was very happy clappy.

As far as I know from talking to a few other traders on the street this is something extra on top of the other existing associations of traders and chambers etc.

One thing strikes me as peculair about this whole thing. It's all very fine that the peple behind it are doing this but where were they two years ago, three years ago when the town was in rag order and there were jobs being lost everywhere and we, myself included, were worried about how we would keep the doors open? Where were the heroes then?

Now that there's the chance of being on telly they're coming out of the woodwork.

As bad as things were in Clonmel a few years ago at least it's not as bad as other towns now. Look at all the businesses opening that are creating jobs. Admittedly it's not great for a fella like me who has been in business for a few years to see increased competition - but it's bringing more people into town.

When we talk about local heroes what about the woman in my street who has been co-ordinating the Xmas lights in the street for over thirty years and doing it voluntarily? What about the tidy towns people? They've never asked for thanks or wanted to be on telly.

Call me a cynic but this town has enough groups already doing the work that the local heroes are saying that they will do.

anyway, happy christmas to you all and thanks for helping us keep the doors open for another year!

Well said, murray sparkle! I believe we already have local heroes in our midst who go unnoticed year after year. As you said..The ones who organise the lights, the tidy towns etc. and what about the ones who organise events such as the many races that are on here each yr, the hospice tree, the junction festival, rallies, and a whole load of other events. The ones who work hard year after year and some who have done for many years!!!

I didnt attend the public meeting in the park hotel (which by the way, form what I could see was only advertised on facebook!) BUT I did have a friend who was there and has kept me updated. It seemed like a load of codswallop!! 3 people running it and not 1 of them a retailer in the town!!! fair enough 2 of them owned a business, but neither had a shop in the town, the third claimed to be a marketing expert? My friend said that she had never heard of her and my friend has worked in the town in marketing for a long time...

The information given also was contradictory - they stated they were going to reduce rates in the town centre and were very adement on this!! funny as the traders in the town centre have been doing this for how many years??? and never any joy! They were also going to work with people with mental illness or something? anyways the whole thing didnt seem to make any sense!!!

So the big question is why?? why these people and why is it not being run by the people who will actually benefit from it and those who know what they're on about!! - The shop keepers!!

Is it just me or does nobody else quite get it??

Was your man Mordant one of them. Never misses a chance for self-publicity does that fella.

I get the feeling it will be like the whole GIY thing a couple of years ago. Popular in the media so a few lads jump on the bandwagon and set up a local branch to give themselves something to do. It will do some good especially for those who get in early and get into the clique but for the majority it will not even register as existing. In a year or two it will be just another club with monthly meetings just like Lyons Club, Rotary, Toastmasters, GIY, Tidy Towns etc etc. Well meaning and doing some good but limited in scope.

    curtainpoles thanks for the post.

I didn't go to the public meeting, but a know a woman who did and she was scathing about it afterwards.

Firstly, it's a self appointed committee and boy! have they lost the run of themselves.

Nothing that was said on the night was original - all they stuff they spoke about is being doing by the Enterprise Board, the tourist office, the Chamber of Commerce, the Traders group, the County Council and others. She said that the people that she was sitting with were all in agreement that these people were all just keen to jump on the back of other peoples work and claim the credit.

I don't get what the correlation is between what they are doing and what is being done in Drogheda.

Also, I believe that one of the group on the stage insulted every single web developer in the town by saying that there were no decent local websites. To make matters worse, apparently one of the local web developers was in the audience. Ouch!

Unlike any of the three that were up on that stage that night I am a rate payer and the local business groups have been doing their level best for years to reduce rates. I actualluy believe that they have - what makes this crowd so different? They haven't a hope. I hate paying them, but it's part of what you sign up to when you open a business in any town. Just get over it and get on with getting people in the door - that's what I do.

Overall, what I heard back was less than complimentary and pretty much highlights what I thought before Christmas -here we have a few people rubbernecking to get on telly and they are trying to piggy back on the work of others to get there.

I asked someone else recently if any of the local business groups were involved, aas you would expect them to be at the heart of something like this and I was told that they weren't.

    Speaks volumes.

would this be like a 'Love Clonmel' effort

Self appointed, Self promotion & full of themselves perhaps? ;)

if it's a three person show with no involvement of local traders - it's bound to fail, although theres a Facebook page that shows a photograph (poorly taken I must say) of four people - doesn't show names tho!!

the Facebook page gives details of a meeting tonight at 6:30 pm in the Town Hall, sort of unusual time for this eh?
