    To sum up this thread:

Put your west Brit in put your full Brit out. Brits in Brits out, shake it all about.....

Looking forward to this wedding does not make anyone a West Brit as far as I can see.

I'm neither actually, just an Irish woman who happens to enjoy Royal Weddings and the pomp and ceremony that goes with them.

There are about 200,000 British people living in Ireland. We also pay licence fees, taxes etc. Notwithstanding this RTE according to its charter, has a responsibility to "strive to reflect fairly and equally the regional, cultural and political diversity of Ireland and its peoples".

Covering Royal occasions is generally very cheap, and programmes achieve high ratings.

Many people will be at work, but because RTE are covering the wedding we will be able to watch it on the RTE player. Many people do not have access to BBC, Sky etc, but even if they do - RTE have a public service remit and a responsibility to cover events such as this.

I understand why many people object to this and of course many British people object to the monarchy as well. But as a general point (and I have no great interest in this particular event) if RTE were to fail in their duties defined in the Public Service Broadcasting charter then I, and hopefully many other people, would challenge their right to charge a licence fee.

I know it's been suggested before, but don't watch the programme if you don't like it.

It's not my cup of tea but a lot of others apparently want to watch.

Sad to see such bitterness and bile being expressed here by so many.

Ar aon nós guím gach rath agus saol fada ar an lanúin.

    Which means.

I hope the couple have a long and happy life.

24 hours worth of coverage being shown over here for it

people want to watch royal weddings, and the british monarchy is probably the most famous of all. if people want to watch, that means tv stations will be able to charge a premium for advertising slots during the coverage, meaning that they'll show it

its supply and demand, same as anything else

They should get the barman in the savage eye to do the commentary for it.id watch that.

The royal wedding to watch will be when Mia Thermopolis gets married.

Two QUUARRS in white linen suits are walkin' down the alter, right, well I tell ya, if that was my son, I'd hit him an allmighty wallop!

Bollocks. For some people it's the exact same thing as others watching Top Gear. It's not reality, but a pure indulgence in fantasy and imagination. Where Top Gear gets people off on three lads having a laugh and doing stuff their watcher's ten year old self would love to get a chance at, the royal wedding indulges the little girl's typical fantasy wedding.

Interesting headline on front page of London evening standard tonight is that there have been 2,000 official applications for street parties in London alone, about the same number as for the Charles and Diana wedding. There are no doubt more republicans in the Uk than back then, but still a massive groundswell of support for the monarchy. Battersea high street (where I stay when I am in London) is expecting an attendance running into thousands. Those suggesting the fall of the monarchy due to a surge in republicanism I think will be waiting a very long time!!

Given that level of enthusiasm for the wedding, plus the large number of UK citizens living and paying taxes and TV licences in ireland, I think it is firmly within RTEs remit as a public service broadcaster to show it

I have just discovered that RTE are showing the Royal Wedding on Friday.

To be honest I am dismayed. Why are they covering the wedding of a foreign prince?

To be honest I can't understand what people find entertaining about watching weddings or what there is to celebrate in watching complete strangers getting married.

As for people saying they enjoy the pomp & ceremony. What a load of rubbish. I just cannot take serious the intellect of people who support a system that promotes the idea that you have a royal family and people outside that are "commoners". That you must refer to them as 'Your Highness', bowing & curtseying. Having the whole system hereditary. Giving out titlies like knighthoods, dukedoms etc.

Whole thing is ridiculous, and I'm glad I live in a republic but I'm very dissppointed that our national TV station has decided to waste money in covering it.

OK then seeing as so many Irish people live in UK and pay taxes there I also demand that the BBC show, All Ireland GAA finals, Rose of Tralee, National Ploughing Championships, The Den & The Angelus!

    The epitome of vapidity.

You could say the same about any activity with no supposed cultural merit: sports, cars; porn, cookery; soap operas etc.

It's not my cup of tea either and monarchy offends me but live and let live.

A remarkable but not so surprising lack of common sense in this thread.

Cant wait for the viewing figures for this.

On the other hand, they're not really reporting on the number of people who couldn't give the tiniest sh!te.

    Ya

I couldn't care less about the wedding but the only people getting excited about it are people like the OP who won't stop complaining.

Also, what does 'west-brit' actually mean? Do I have to love GAA, move to the West of Ireland and speak Irish to be considered 'Irish' enough for you? I am actually f*cking sick of the smug culture police trying to categorise us. I am Irish and proud and I don't have to justify this.

The papers have reported little else over the weekend. Some numbers for you (from the ICM Guardian poll):

Only 20% of the population enthusiastically follow royal goings on on a regular basis (you could infer therefore that 80% of people therefore dont really care, or are opposed to the monarchy)

    But (from the same poll):
50% of British people will watch the wedding.
75% of British people support the monarchy and think the UK would be worse off without it (I would agree with that). This support has been steady at between 70 and 75% (from various different polling companies) for the last 20 years or more.

Summary: The polls show that people dont actively follow the Royals any more, but support for the monarchy has not dimished at all since the 1980s

Don't worry about it, you should be in work all day so can easily miss it.

Does it usually bother you what RTE are showing on their weekday daytime schedules?

Hurrah for a three day working week for me. :D

Sorry but that is a totally pointless answer.

I don't think RTE should be covering items that are irrelavant to this country.

Also, I'm a republican (as in anti-monarchist, rather than Brits out type!) and just hate everything to do with royal families and the unquestioned subservience that goes with it, so therefore can't stand the publicity it gets!

...and what are you going to be doing on Friday?

Of the people who are going to be sat at home and able to watch RTE on Friday what %'age of them do you think may have a vauge interest in watching a posh'ish bird marry a very posh bloke in a uniform and then go for a ride in a horse drawn carridge?

Hopefully most of the people here complaining are not going to be in a position to watch it anyway as they will be working. Does the fact that some crappy foreign soap is on during the day normally bother you?

Whether I'm home or not on Friday doesn't matter.

I just don't think that the national broadcaster should be covering an event that promotes foreign monarchies, simple as that.

It's a glorified celebrity wedding and don't see how it warrants national coverage.
