Pokemon Emerald or Leaf Green

On the advice of Banjo, and because he gave such good advice, I decided to repost my question in the dedicated Pokemon forum - didn't even know there was one before now being honest....sorry bout that....

Want to buy a retro Pokemon title for my GB Micro that I recently got out of storage. Don't want to break the bank, so have researched into the titles, and it comes down to 2 - Pokemon Emerald or Pokemon Leaf Green

Now, I played the original Red, Blue and then Yellow when Pokemon first launched (I was really into them at the time) and later played Diamond on the DS and I know Leaf Green is a remake with better graphics and a few twists but I'm wondering which people might recommend out of the two?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

dunno whether it was nostalgia or just genuine value's worth, but leafgreen and firered were always preferred to ruby/sapphire/emerald. i didn't really like the third generation but it's a very different type of a game to the remakes so it's really down to you think you'd rather experience.

Just thinking about this - why do you want to play LG/Emerald over say Heart Gold or Platinum on the DS? If it's pure nostalgia, Emerald is a game in (almost) it's original form (given it's the "evolution" of Ruby/Sapphire it's not quite the original) where FR/LG are remakes so it's never going to be quite the game you remember.

I can't speak for functional differences as it's ages since I played 'em and I can't remember.

Retrogamer (not sure what forums he/she frequents) might also be of some use to you as I seem to recall they had at least one of these games in their "now playing" signature in the last year or so.

Ive got fire red and emerald and for me theres no comparison. Fire red is much better in terms of storyline and catchable pokemon. If you have played the earlier games but havnt played much since then stick with leaf green as it will be more familiar.

I struggled through emerald and really only stayed playing it to get the pokemon to finish my pokedex in diamond

far enough, thanks for the advice guys, leaf green seems to be the winner for me in this as I prefer the more retro storyline and obviously the familiarity of gameplay

Story wise, I prefer Emerald. Leaf Green might be the nostalgia option, I just prefered Emerald.

Leaf Green is definitely the better game so you can't really go wrong with it, but if you've already played Red, Blue and Yellow then having a new world to explore with different Pokémon in it should make Emerald a fresher experience. It seems I enjoyed Gen III more than most!

    Main differences:
    Pokémon Emerald:
    • Pokémon have (little 2 frame) animations when they enter battle
    • A fresh experience if you not played Ruby or Sapphire
    • Has a great Battle Frontier section when you have beaten the Elite Four
    • Has odd Contests which are a break from the main story
    Pokémon Leaf Green:
    • Classic story retold brilliantly
    • Has a little help menu that can be called upon at any time (can be turned off if needed)
    • Crisper graphics
