    Hey all,

I was just wondering what is the protocol if you lose a book belonging to the James Joyce library. It's a general interest book rather than an essential text book.

I heard librocop cuts off your hand.

Yup, just tell him you're a lefty if your right handed, 'cos then you'll get to keep your good one.

    > I believe there is a 'fine' that is proportional to the value of the book.
No point in having a standard fine of 20e, when some books worth 100e plus could go 'missing' rather easily.

I have a feeling the fine is also increased, as it is during Superfines period.

Only 5 euro! That seems very generous considering fines can reach €50 for overdues.

€20 for bringing lab coats into the library? What would be so bad about that?

The only thing I can think of is health and safety, maybe. Bringing chemicals, bacteria etc into the library on the lab coats.

€5 sounds very low, if that was more widely known i could see students abusing the system if they've racked up a big fine.

Well I have found where the book is for sale (it is not a very common book and is no longer in print, so it is not in large book stores) it is worth €27. Would the library charge me much if I bought the replacement for them?

I thought I had lost one before (I'd actually left it in Copi-Print) and I'm pretty sure they said they'd charge me whatever it cost them to buy another copy.

That says handling charge for lost books, I'd presume that is on top of teh cost of replacement of the book, otherwise plenty of books would be getting 'lost'.

You'd be better to check with them first, in case they are d1cks about it and won't accept your bought copy. Might waste you even more money. You should go and talk to them and see what they say, probably the easiest thing to do.

I would say the €5 is on top of the cost of replacing the book. Hardback law books could cost the guts of €250

You'll get invoiced for the cost of the book - plus the 5 euro charge (the book has to be processed etc). Bring the details of the replacement copy that you found to the library - just double check that it's the same edition/publisher etc (this depends on the book - they may be happy with a more recent edition).

It happens quite a bit so they're not going to be awkward about it at all.

Has anybody actually ever been charged for using mobiles and eating food? 20 euro what a joke but i suppose its expected with ucd

Last time I was in the library, some people were chatting in the Law area and the guy required them to hand their student card over and to follow him, because they were supposedly the only ones chatting.

I wonder if they got a fine. Although that wouldn't suprise me.

Happened to me last year, left the book on a train, think I paid €30 to cover it.

One of my first days in college I took a trip into the library to have a look around with an empty tea container thing.
Librocop's little minion saw me, he was like sprinting after me and then he started literally screaming at me in the middle of the study area, people were standing up to look and stuff, he demanded my student card which I gave him (ready to puke on his shoes at this point ) then he proceeded to shout "Oh yeah, always the first years not reading the sign, thinking they'll get away with it".
He then escorted me to the sign and read it aloud to me. He then escorted me to the door while stills shouting at me (cheeks on fire, people staring.) and then some guy shouted "Yeah fine her! Gwan!" And libro-cop's minion was distracted by this, asked me to get out and went after this other guy who was shouting at me.

So yeah...they kinda enforce this kinda stuff. :(:(

There is room for 2,000 people in the JJ Library - I was thrilled they enforced this stuff.

Minor tidbit, by the way, for people who accidentally rack up massive fines for books during Superfines. I once owed like 50 quid or whatever the maximum was to the library for a book I'd lost. They wanted me to pay for a new one which was 47 I think, plus the 5 euro adminisistration fee. No problem, I paid up. Found the book a few days later, which I gave back, and they returned the money I paid for the new book and just kept the administration fee. I dunno if they just forgot or what the story was, but the 50 euro fine wasn't mentioned, so I wound up paying only 5 euro on that 50 euro fine. Might be worth giving a go if you ever rack up some fines like that.
