calls after dusk

    a couple of nights age we heard a new sound in the field next to the house,

    (grasshopper warbler you might say) but no , it calls out for 3 or 4 seconds at a time changing location rapidly,

    sounds seem to be 70-80 Meters apart,

    its a sound similar to a emperor penguin call ,no 8 on this page

    Mad i know but thats the closest i can call it .

    it could be a pool frog ?

    any suggestions. ?

    definitely have to invest in a good sound recorder!!

    there is some wetland at one side of the field,

    yes that sounds like it , only the last bit of the call.
    he was still at it at 1am this morning.. must be the full moon..

    Almost cetainly a Snipe. They have two song types, the first being a frequently repeated "chip-r, chip-r, chip-r" and the other being the "bleating" that you heard. The sound is produced by the air blowing through the outer tail feathers during a steep dive.

    Most frequently performed in the evenings and at night.

    Thats a new one on me - the name that is. I heard it for the first time last year. Love it. Good few common snipe around here.
