Saw this on Eurogamer, can't seem to find the official announcement, so that will have to do.

Important part is the locations and dates:
2011 Pokémon Video Game National Championships: European locations

June 4th, Birmingham, United Kingdom - National Exhibition Centre, Hall 8
June 11th, Rome, Italy - Fiera Roma, Hall 12, Ingresso Nord
June 18th, Madrid, Spain - IFEMA, Hall 1, Feria de Madrid
June 25th, Paris, France - Espace Grande Arche, Parvis de La Défense
July 2nd , Cologne, Germany - EXPO XXI Köln GmbH, Gladbacher Wall 5

Birmingham NEC is next to the airport, and the IFEMA in Madrid is a short 10minute taxi from the airport. It's the first time Italy has a VGC.

    So, Boards.ie Euro-trip?

Well the leaving cert starts on the 8th so I could do Birmingham but it wouldn't be ideal. My last exam is on the 21st so Paris and Germany are options. I'd want to be booking flights and stuff now though. Anyone else thinking of going Paris or Germany?

My calender clashes with Rome, Paris and Germany, but I should be up for the other ones

    I like France myself.

Birmingham for me, who's coming? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

I suppose I could do Birmingham. I feel I'm fairly on top of study and stuff at the moment so it is manageable, just not my first choice :P

Was looking up flights to Germany and paris and it's quite expensive. Would have to stay a week in Paris for it to work out at a reasonable price. Italy and Spain are just not an option for me at all.

I can get to Birmingham easily.

Looks like next year for me with the Leaving and no EV trained pokemon or a strategy for that matter.

I'll most likely be going to Birmingham. I've already worked out a strategy that I'm really happy with

I get to plan and train up at least three squads (one for me, my husband and new-to-compeditive-play friend), possibly another two if I can get the Junior and Senior up to speed in time...

Never really bothered with competitive play, apart from earth quake what type of moves/mon would you regularly see??

Last year I seen a good tactic where on a rain team where Toxicroak has Dry Skin and Black Sludge. Palkia useng Surf will heal it also. But that won't work this year because of Unova only Pokemon. I'll be watching some videos of the qualifiers to see some of the strategies so I can get ideas for next year.

Also, if you don't Pokesav properly or EV train, you won't last. Especially in the World Championship.

does the cart check not stop pokesav mon?(isn that waht buzz uses to clone??)

  • Registered Users Posts: 87 ✭✭r0cks0l1dd

Some people who will try Pokesav use a legality checker program. I don't know how it works though, especially with Action Replay.

Your best bet for the VGCs would be EV training just in case you mess up.

Does anyone else remember when Nintendo said that people who have the highest ratings on the Global Battle Union would be invited straight to Worlds? I think it was something like that.

    It's official now.

    And they banned Sky Drop.....:P

Only items acquired in Pokémon Black Version or Pokémon White Version, or received at an official Pokémon event or promotion, may be used.

That's an interesting rule - so what does that ban?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭elekid

It's also interesting that you get to see your opponents six Pokémon before battle. I'd be tempted to bring along a Zoroark, even if it's not on my team of four, just to keep my opponent guessing :)

Top of my head, the EV-berries anyway, and oh of course those funny berries that give you boosts/damage opponent on contact.

    Dream world berries??

''Each Pokémon on a player's team may use held items, though no two Pokémon may hold the same item during battle''

Does this more than one Pokemon from the 6 in your battle box can have the same items, they just can't be in the same battle

''Already learned by a Pokémon that was received at an official Pokémon event or promotion''
Does this include the Dream World?

Probably because of the Gravity glitch. I don't see any use in the move anyway unless you manage to try and set up some way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

So what are the banned pokémon and moves list? Can't seem to find it on the site.

All Pokemon not from Unova are banned. Keldeo, Meloetta and Genesect are obviously banned. Also, Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem are. Sky Drop I think is the only move banned.

And Victini. Zoroark and Zorua with Snarl (and those that can breed with them) are allowed as it was a Japanese event move.

Dream World berries are nothing special. They are just the "weakens super effective attack" berries and rubbish ones.
Dream World berries are nothing special. They are just the "weakens super effective attack" berries and rubbish ones.
Yeah. The only 3 Pokemon (that I can think of now) can't even use the best one, Yache Berry because they aren't from Unova.

Wasn't the World Championships last year best out of 3? Have they changed it (for the better)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

Reading up on the PDFs there, this helps to clarify a few things with regard to last turn double knockouts:
    • Suiciders = lose
    • Recoil = win
    • Ability/Held item = win

Another thing to note that if both Pokémon die by weather, the Pokémon to faint last wins. I can't find anywhere on the Internet that can say so, but I think this means the Pokémon with lower Speed will win, since they get damaged last?
    r0cks0l1dd wrote: »

Nope, the Worlds are still best of 3 matches, during both the Swiss part and the Elimination part.

Although can you not get those from the Dream World?

    Exactly.

    It should do.

At the moment Ryanair return flights from Dublin to the Birmingham event are €38.98 all in. Out in the morning and back same day. But there's only two seats left at that price.

    €20 right now.
There was a sale on last year and we got them really cheap.

    So who's definitely coming?
    Are we booking tickets yet?

Obviously Buzz is going to be there, but who's flying over?

Not sure if its true or not, but intresting bit of info from Kotaku while talking about the DreamWorld.
The Pokémon encountered in Dream World may look like normal, everyday pocket monsters, but they'll have access to skills that they've never been able to use in previous iterations of the game. For the serious Pokémon battler, the element of surprise alone would be a serious advantage, which is likely why this year's Pokémon Video Game Championships limits teams to Pokémon encountered in the new Unova Region.

That's Tauros Droppings in relation to Unova Pokemon. They all have Hidden Dream World abilities but not a single Unova Pokemon has had their's officially released yet. Not even in Japanese.

Seriously some writers need to do their homework...

I'm definitely going, but I am going to go over the night before and stay locally. The flight home isn't until 10pm so It's going to be a long day. I'm looking forward to it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

How much is it costing you altogether?

  • Registered Users Posts: 271 ✭✭Wobbuffet

It wasn't too bad. Friday night flight, budget hotel and return flight cost €80 altogether.

At the moment the morning flight over and night flight back on Saturday is around €40 so anyone thinking of going should look into booking sooner rather then later

The good thing about the Birmingham venue is that it's walking distance from the airport so no transport costs for the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

    Oh Gods it's so tempting!!!1!

    For anyone interested:

It seems one can book Virgin only trains from one of my local stations to the NEC from only £9
    CheapTrainVirginOnly.jpg

The nearest airports from my gaff are (organised by distance) London City, Gatwick and Heathrow. London City serves naff all, Gatwick to my place can require 3 changes and Heathrow requires an hour or so tube ride followed by finally getting on the train out to mine. The Gatwick trains costs about £20 or so and the Heathrow costing less if you have an Oyster card, so I'm guessing about £10-£12 as the Oyster can only charge you that much per day.

Although it might work out cheaper to fly to Birmingham on the day and come over, if anyone wanted to come a day or two beforehand (if flights permit cheapness) and have a trip around London with their Pokémon. You are more than welcome to stay at my place, just bring a kibble treat for the cat as you will be sleeping in her bed :)

I still haven't come close to deciding a team though, with less than a month to go. The one strategy I've come up with so far is brilliant when it works but quickly falls apart if something goes wrong and there's lots that can go wrong with it. Hmm..

Sounds a bit like a gamble... An all or nothing kind of deal. Hope it works out for you though. I can't make it this year unfortunately. As it stands I'd be lucky to make it to a day meeting in town :(

Yeah, it was a bit all or nothing so I've spent the day planning something much more reliable.

That sucks about not being able to go. If there's a special download Pokémon this year, like the shiny Eevee from last year, maybe one of us could bring your copy of the game and download it for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

It now turns out I start my 3rd year project literally two days before, doubt I can get the time off. Crushed. But glad I hadn't already booked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Haven't booked yet but hopefully I'll be doing so on unemployed pay day. :)

Just don't book trains on thetrainline.com as they charge a higher booking fee than other websites. Like Virgin Trains.

I met Buzz over the weekend and she has several spare Deino, Timburr and Zorua with good IV's. If anyone wants to train any of these for VGC, send her a PM to arrange a trade

Stats are in the order HP/Att/Def/Sp.Att/Sp.Def/Speed

    Timburr

    Adamant. Guts. Female 21/31/23/20/2/2
    Adamant. Guts. Male 19/31/17/30/10/2
    Hasty. Sheer Force. Male 26/31/30/8/10/8
    Adamant. Guts. Female 21/31/19/19/4/22
Adamant. Guts. Female 21/31/19/19/27/2 Hidden Power Ice 69
    Adamant. Guts. Female 21/31/5/28/12/2
    Adamant. Guts. Male 14/31/23/18/10/17
    Adamant. Guts. Male 17/31/6/13/10/17

    Deino

Jolly. Male. 27/16/27/31/26/26 Hidden Power Bug 68
Modest. Male 5/31/24/31/12/31 Hidden Power Ghost 46
Hasty. Female. 25/6/20/31/14/31 Hidden Power Bug 66
Hasty. Female 1/31/19/30/31/31 Hidden Power Electric 69
Mild. Male. 27/28/20/29/26/31 Hidden Power Bug 56

There are loads of Zorua and I don't have time to list them all, they have a variety of natures and hidden powers and all of them have maxed IV's in at least two of the Special Attack/Special Defense/Speed stats. If you want a specific Zorua, let me know and I'll check the list for you.

So VGC season starts today in Seattle. Guess it'll be time to investigate team lineups, what strategies are in use and which ones actually work :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭Linoud

Sounds like a plan, alright, Chris. :P I'll be continuing my breeding till I can find some information to look at.

No real tactic set yet, just training a list of pokemon I think I will use, see how they gel together and stuff. My tactic is adapting and countering what I see, nothing special. Im never one for crazy plans or setups.

I've booked my flight, along with a friend, for the weekend. Should be fun. So who all is going from Ireland and representing? B|

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Looks like I'm going tohave to drop out this year. :/
Unless by some stroke of brilliance I can afford a flight a few days before that is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

I've been looking up couch surfing in Birmingham, just on the off chance that I get the time off. Maybe that'd help if people are stuck for accommodation, apparently it's much safer than you'd think.
