The youth volunteers of the year were named recently. A strong volunteer spirit is a positive attribute for young people and helps to broaden their horizons.
Galway: All Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year Named

Megan Fahy from Sligo and Seoighe Kearney from Cork were named All Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year last night at a ceremony in Galway, at the conclusion of the fifth annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards on March 30th.
Seoighe and Megan received €1000 for a charity of their choice, an engraved gold medallion and personal recognition from Ireland rugby coach, Declan Kidney. They will also travel to the United States in May to take part in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremony.

They were among 20 finalists from throughout the island of Ireland, who were honoured at the event for outstanding volunteer service. Each of the finalists received a personal award of €500 and an engraved silver medallion presented by Declan Kidney.
Pramerica Systems Ireland sponsors the Pramerica Spirit of Community programme in partnership with the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) and the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI). The programme was introduced three years ago to encourage youth volunteerism throughout Ireland and to identify and reward young role models.

The nomination deadline for these youth awards is coming up soon. The awards could be a good goal to aim towards for second level students during the year but the most important thing is the volunteer effort that helps the community and makes a difference in people's lives as well as the experience value for the volunteers themselves.

How to apply for the awards?

All second-level students who volunteer in their community, at school or abroad are encouraged to apply now, by submitting applications to their school principal by the 26th of October. Principals will review the applications and nominate one student in the junior category (for students up to age 16) and one student in the senior category (for students 17 to 19 years old). The deadline for the nominations is the 11th of November.
