Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

MK 2/face-lift sierra cosworth 3 door???

Was leaving Dublin t via the Kildare motorway on Saturday I was passed out by what I would describe as face-lift sierra 3 door sierra cosworth. It was the 87 onward body style and RHD.
I know for a fact that the only face-lift onwards sierra cosworth was the sapphire. I also believe that the face-lift 3 door sierra was only available in LHD markets
The car I saw must be an aftermarket creation – or a rare escaped SVO/SVE proto type. Does anybody know of this car, I cannot remember the reg. it was definitely and Irish one, it had 4x4 emblems on the wings and was diamond white ??

    Was it a 3 door or a 5 door?

If it was a 5 door, I'm thinking of an XR 4x4 or a 2.9 4x4. The 2.9 could be got with the Turbo Technics conversion.

If it was a 3 door, it must be home made, as the 4x4 Cosworth came out in '90 (ish, '91 Maybe?) and the 3 door Cosworth went out of production in '88. There was a 2WD Sapphire in-between.

There was a few test mules with the 4WD running gear, but I don't know if any of the mules were on the 3 door shells. But knowing Ford, anything was possible. (the first prototype Escort Cosworth was a Sapphire 4x4 floorpan cut down and stuffed under a mk3 Escort RS Turbo body; the Escort Twin Cam was built when Boreham "borrowed" an Escort Prototype body and stuffed Lotus Cortina Rally Car mechanicals into it!)

It’s was definitely a 3 door. I follow the blue oval scene myself and definitely took a good look to make sure I wasn’t seeing things
It definitely had the sapphire cosworth style lights bumpers etc but with a 3 door body style. The quarter panel glass was a one piece type (not XR4 style) and it had a wail-tale spoiler and ‘ford sierra cosworth’ on the boot
I definitely reckon it was an aftermarket conversion – it looked pretty good!!
I wonder did anybody ever do a sierra cosworth 5 door hatch back or estate. I have seen a few P100 cosworths in magazines

There was one of these in white up North that was featured in the mags a few years ago. I have a funny feeling it came South eventually. Easy enough to convert I'd say - just bonnet, wings, bumper & lights

slightly off topic,,,,but I used to see a facelifted 87/88 Sierra Ghia estate on pre 87 plates:confused:....and then I knew of a pre 87 Sierra on new 88 plates.......:)

Richard Heely made a 3door Cosworth that had facelift bumpers and lights way back in probably'87 or so. I think it was later "corrected"

This is very similar to the car that passed me
Except : it was RHD, had no role cage, it had escort cosworth alloys (I think ??) and had 4x4 badges on the wings
(how can you insert a pic from my computer as opposed to a URL ??)

Was that not pretty much true of all Escort Cosworths, a Sapphire pan and running gear, clad in Escort panels?

Made for the continental European Market, They had essentially a Mk1 shell with a Mk2 front grafted on, i think they changed the rear lights aswell.

So it was a Mk2 3-door, as far as I know they did only do LHD, but it would be easy to convert for someone in the know.

So no, you were not seeing things.

I need to get out more :o

Escort Cosworth's were based on the Mk5.

Underneath the EsCos didn't resemble a standard Escort, it was essentially a Sierra Cosworth 4x4 with an Escort shell.

I feel like a geek knowing all this when the cars themselves are older than me. :(

The only mk2 3dr sierra was in Poyntspass N Ireland, Gavin McClure owed it. Was sold to someone reportedly from Dublin,
Gavin told me it was 1 of 10 built by Graame Goode Racing, was fitted with 4x4 cosworth running gear and RHD, possibly south African shell.
Saw the the car but at the time he was looking to much. Kicking my self ever since.
One mint car, was on a Qplate
