Little depth? Have you played the games?

Yep I own every one of them and have completed them all including all feathers/side quest etc.
While they are entertaining I still think they are repetitive and no were near worthy of top 5 games ever or add any new mechanics or ground breaking game play to the get excited over

The first one especially over-rated, nice video shame about the song really.
Everything looked beautiful, the visuals, the animation, the smooth parkour running, great.
But the locked off parts of the city, Wrong!
The scenes in the present that ruin the flow of the action, Wrong!
The fact that nearly every event seems to wind up the same, follow here, pickpocket/kill there, RUN AWAY!
Not enough gameplay variety at all.
The second one seems to have addressed much that was wrong and I haven't played the mission pack that you describe as a third game.
Assassins Creed is a nice series, love the history of the period but all thats cool about the series could survive after jettisoning the awful sci-fi lite meta plot.
I expect it to be completely forgotten in a matter of a couple of years, replaced by the next big thing.
Not really Top 5 material, imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,536 ✭✭✭unky chop chop

Yeah I remember seeing the video for the first one where you are pushing your way through a crowd and thinking it could be something special.
I think they are going the right way though after the last installment. It needs more depth, upgrades, learning new moves, more RPG elements

    1 - creatures 2 - apex - C64
    2 - doom - Id - PC
    3 - virtua racing - saga - megadrive
    4 - starcraft - blizzard - PC
    5 - tetris - nintendo - gameboy

for me all of these games were The most groundbreaking
for technical and/or gameplay innovation for their platforms.

I would still play any of these games today in a heartbeat.

    Creatures..what a game.
Best graphics I've ever seen on C64. I totally forgot about that game.
Remember getting it in Virgin Mega stores for my birthday. Full price title,Hard cardboard box,12 pounds.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,891 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Loved Creatures as well. It had the best C64 graphics until Mayhem in Monsterland appeared which was funnily enough made by the same two brothers.

Off the top of my head...

    Turrican 2
Gunstar Heroes (Forgot about that till I read it in this thread!)
    Creatures 2
Maybe Lemmings... On Megadrive which had 2 extra levels of levels.
One of the Super Marios... World maybe. (Though I haven't really played any of the modern ones)

With Sonic The Hedgehog - I think it gets off to a great start, but as you progress through the game it loses it's edge and TBH gets kind of boring. Nowhere near the depth and breadth that any of the SMB games have

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭Concerned2

Very difficult to pick only 5 but off the top of my head from 5 different platforms I thought of the following

    1) Armalyte on C64 , perhaps the most impressive graphics in any C64 game ?
    2) Wonderboy on Arcade, at the time nothing groundbreaking about the graphics or sound but the learning curve was just about perfect. You could get just that little bit further with every go which made it incredibly popular.
    3) Civilization on PC , can't believe nobody mentioned this. Is there any other game out there that can suck up a week of your life like this can ?
    4) Legen of Zelda ,Ocarina of time on N64 .Beautiful graphics , fantastic sound & a massive game. It always appears on the "best of" lists so it must be 1 of the best ever.
    5) GTA - Vice city on the PS2. Seemed to capture the 80's pefectly , the music , the big name actors doing the voice overs , the mixture of humour & voilence ... they seemed to get so many things right with this game the follow up's all seemed a bit meh !

Another day, another 5 fave games,
Starstrike 3d on the speccy, an amazing version of Star Wars done quite early in the.ZX Spectrums life span.
Uridium on the C64, genius shooter, a bugger though!
Rollcage 2, move over Wipeout 2097, this one kicks your ass! On the PS1.
Need for Speed on the 3DO, quite simply one of the best racing games ever.
Return Fire, again 3DO, a beautifully crafted game, nothing wrong here at all, the Maps 'O Death pack added much needed single player challenges.

Well I do know that Ciderman has a love for mediocre FPS games like a wino has a love for different vintages of Buckfast but Fire Warrior is beyond mediocre and frankly it disgusts me.

Mine would go something like this:

    We Love Katamari (PS2)
    Super Metroid (SNES)
    Persona 4 (PS2)
    Death Smiles (Arcade / 360)
Half-Life 2 and its episodes (PC)

If one was to extend that to another five, as would be a thing to do under the circumstances:

LoZ: Link to the Past (SNES/GBA)
    Bayonetta (360, there's no PS3 version)
    Beyond Good & Evil (PS2/360/PC)
    Portal / Portal 2 (360/PS3/PC)
    Pilotwings 64 (N64 - a new entry, and one I distressingly don't own)

I know this is largely an opinion thread and people are listing their favourite games, but if we are to go by the thread title, it's criminal that Tetris has only been mentioned once.

It is, hands down, the best game of all time.

Pain in the arse sometimes. I mean, aren't games supposed to be less addictive the better you get at them? This morning, I sat down to play a quick game of say 10 minutes while waiting for something and didn't get off for over an hour. Why do programmers assume we have any self control?
Oh, and bless the pour soul who interupts you during a good game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭bellylint

Tough to call, but these games have sucked up an inordinate amount of my time that I cant forget em.

    1) Planescape:Torment
    2) Dawn of war
    3) God Of War
    4) Master of Orion 2
    5) X-Com

Would love to see another in the line for xcom, and and an updated version of Moo2 (not moo3).

As a programmer, I can safely say, that none of us have any self control either. :P

But I wouldn't say games are "supposed to get less addictive". Games are meant to waste time, so the point is to get addicted. :P :)

    Erm, no.

To expand, I really enjoyed that game, and it wasn't mediocre either, it was a pot of fun and had a great immersive single player campaign.
The sense of being the underdog up against the mght of the empire, the game was a lot of fun and quite underrated.
Of course this is just my opinion, you are just as entitled to yo
    ur wrong opinion ;)

There are tons of good shooters that rarely feature, Coldwinter which is Goldeneye with better mechanics, better framerate and with added swearing! Metal Arms which at times is quite brilliant, remote controlling the enemy, cutscenes with humour and tons of action.

Just because some love obscure jap rpgs just because they are...
    1- Obscure
    2- Japanese
    3- Rpgs
You won't see me slagging off!
Even.if the addition of a dating sim to the mix is something some can't resist!
    :)

And re: Buckfast, I am more of a whiskey drinker but mostly a lover of cola and crisps together with nacho type snacks...

The amount Sky One spammed their advert time with FireWarrior ads was insane. I've never seen a game get so much tv coverage!

Well I played it and after a quite good opening level Fire Warrior was just so bland afterwards doing absolutely nothing to stand out other than it's terrible AI. Also the voice acting was appalling.

Cold Winter I'll give you though, very underrated shooter, far better than fire warrior as well.

Metal Arms I really don't see the appeal it had. Played it a good bit and I found it bland as well and don't get where the good reviews came from. Perhaps I need to play it some more but I turned it off whena scripting glitch stopped me from progressing.

haha, maybe we should come up with a list of "The Best 5 games ever" and when a similar thread resurfaces again in 6months we can each individually list exactly those 5 games, that will make for very interesting reading.

Well, now that you have your Firewarrior feelings off your chest, again, its probably worth mentioning that they are my favourite games...
    Tis all.

    Also worth a mention..

MDK, I played it on the pc

Diddy Kong Racing on the N64

Super Mario Sunshine, on the 'cube, starting it again!

Need for Speed 3, Ps, sadly underplayed as Gran Turismo came out at the same time.

Starblade Alpha, on the 3DO and PS.

See, no dodgy selections there, nothing that can stir up any trouble.....

Always find this hard to judge, so I suppose it makes sense to mention the games I've spend the most amount of hours with

    1: Advance wars:dual strike
    2: Sonic 2
    3: Super mario 64
    4: Pokemon Gold/Silver
    5: super metroid

but there's SOOO much more I wanna mention :)

Mario bros 3 - first game i ever played and took my 20 years to compete
mario kart double dash - love it on multiplayer, played it so much
secret of mana - love the music, first of its kind I played and multiplayer is frustrating but fun
streets of rage - the joy of playing it on hardest is joyous
f-zero - class music, best on any game I'd say, well maybe and one of the few games I ever bothered completing on all levels and the unlocked one. Battery died on the cart so ill have to do it again.

Use to dust it off ever couple of years and try to pass it without the whistles. Everything goes grand until that bleedin' castle with all the doors in world 8.
Finally just went on line and got the correct combination.

Stuck on Streets of Rage at the moment though. so that will be stop, although I have passed that.

    1. Outrun (arcade)
    2. R-Type (arcade/PC-E)
    3. Bomberman (MD/Saturn)
    4. IL-2 (PC)
    5. Battlefield 2 (PC)

...this is a toughie, as having to make allowances for the last 2, since the 3 genres I have dedicated the most playing hours to, over the years, are definitely flight sims, racing and FPS'es.

Outrun is definitely what gave me the racing game bug, and I spent obscene amounts on it in arcades way back when. I don't think I ever fully recovered from the crushing disappointment that were the home ports. For me, there's only 1 way to play it: sat down in the hydraulic jumbo version!

R-Type I got on just about every format I ever owned, it's the 1st SCHMUP I always get back to every time I suffer a "MAME period". There are better, harder, more beautiful SCHMUPs, for sure...but to me, it's just 'it' and always will be: looks, gameplay, sound and level design, a perfect gaming synergy.

Bomberman, again I got on just about every format I ever owned, and it's the game on which I probably racked up the most hours (SP and MP) on aggregate over the years. Only the obligatory tetris sessions on the lav' and 2-player SPFIITurbo have gotten close in the "hours played/fun had" stakes.

I still play the odd bout of BF2 every now and then, years after sequels and probably better MP FPS'es have come out.

As combat flight sims go, IL-2 has not yet been betterred IMHO, again years after it came out. Been saving the pennies for a Vuzix VR headset for a while now ;)

There's no shame in loving R-type. It's arguably the finest shooter ever made.
