I am pretty sure most of the British football articles that appear in the IT are taken from the Guardian. I believe the Irish Independent take theirs from the Telegraph.

Yeah i get that impression from their website - still the same thing though, sadly it's not just the scottish media who are guilty of **** stirring.

Re: Jelle's post, i get what your saying - but he wasnt having a dig at anything Irish or Celtic related there. It seems people are all too willing to jump on him at the moment even if he is simply trying to explain his standpoint. The absence of Brewster must be getting to sompe people! :p

Why? I dont particularly see anything wrong with what he has said in that post.

No offence, but to hear a fan of The Rangers FC coming out with "Integration comes from two sides though, right ?" just made me laugh a little. :)

I'm not going to get into a debate over whether The Rangers FC are or were a sectarian club or not. I have my opinion on that as I'm sure you have yours. What I do know, and what I reckon most decent fans of The Rangers FC know if they are honest about it, is that their fanbase has a much larger problem element of hardcore loyalist support than Celtic would have equivalent hardcore republican elements. The Rangers FC haven't been able to shake off that element as successfully as Celtic have imo.

Coupled with that, loyalism and, to some degree, unionism is intrinsically linked with the Orange Order and Free Presbyterianism, both of which as we all know are inherently anti-Catholic. Neither republicanism or nationalism have that same link with religion (which is obviously a good thing), hence even those Celtic fans with republican ideals are not likely to hate others based purely on religious persuasion.

To put it simply - and this is just my opinion but also my firm belief - the fans of The Rangers FC who hate Celtic fans largely hate them because they see them as mainly Catholic and that many would have Irish heritage. The famine song, billy boys etc. are living proof of that fact. Read the words of those songs to see. The Celtic fans who hate fans of The Rangers FC hate them simply because they are fans of The Rangers FC. Not that I'm saying one form of hatred is any less vile than another, but hatred associated with heritage, race and religion is always going to end up being a lot more dangerous than hatred based on association with a different football club.

    Disagree Paulo.

Not speaking for all Celtic fans, but to hear some of your fellow fans use stuff like 'Soon there'll be no Protestants at all' and the likes makes it perfectly clear that there is also an element at Parkhead which hates Rangers because they are seen as the enemy, based on religion and political beliefs.

That song is sung by a minute number of supporters outside the ground and in a few pubs. They are morons and idiots. That song NEVER, and I do mean NEVER picks up any voice inside the ground.

True... unlike the famine song and billy boys. That's the point, the scale of the problem in the two clubs cannot be compared, it's like chalk and cheese.

I can honestly say I've never even heard that song, it can't exactly be common.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

That might very well be, but The Billy Boys and Why Don't You Go Home hardly pick up any voice at Ibrox either, it's a morgue most of the time anyway.

I guess with both fans it's the away support which mostly indulges in these chants.

No Jelle... absolutely NOT both sets of fans.... The one song you can point out as being sectarian is NOT SUNG by anything more than literally a handfull of fuckwits in our support.....the 2 main offending songs your lot sing, are sung in voice by 1000's of your fans....There is a MASSIVE difference!
We are NOT 2 sides of the one coin!
Fuck the "Old Firm" - No more guilt by association!

Aye, it would really help Rangers if they could be associated with a club which had supporters that were more sectarian, violent and bigoted then their own so theyd look better by comparison.

We can all look at negatives and so on. The sectarian chants in history from both sides, child abuse and so on. It won't change anything.

    From the Record:
    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/football/spl/celtic/2011/04/23/neil-lennon-i-d-reconsider-my-position-as-celtic-boss-if-threats-got-worse-it-s-affecting-life-outside-the-game-86908-23080861/

If Lennon leaves at the end of the season because of this I'll be fuming. I'd support any decision he makes or the Celtic board makes, but it'll set us back 30 years that such terrorism will have won.
NEIL LENNON last night admitted terrorism could force him to quit Celtic.

The manager has stayed strong in the face of abuse and death threats since he first pulled on the Hoops 11 years ago.

Less than a fortnight ago he vowed the bigots would not drive him out but as the madness is cranked up to an unimaginable level, Lennon now admits he is close to breaking point.

He said: "If this was to escalate further I would seriously have to reconsider my position. I can do my job OK but living a normal life is different. The sectarian side of things had gone quiet for me for a few years but since last January, when things started to get sent in the post, it's taken a turn for the worse again and that's unpleasant.

"You get offered the Celtic job once in a lifetime and you take all of the crap that goes with it but I get things a little differently.

"What's happening to me is unprecedented. I want it to end. I want it to stop."

Lennon knows by making his admission it might spark his tormentor of tormentors to ratchet up the madness further to ensure he does walk. But he reckons a positive could emerge from his revelation.

He said: "If activity (from the lunatics) is stepped up it might increase the chance of the culprit being caught."

Lennon was involved in a touchline bust-up with Rangers manager-in-waiting Ally McCoist at Celtic Park in March.

But the Irishman has now thanked the Ibrox coach for his support.

Lennon said: "I welcomed Ally's words about this matter but I also understand there's not a lot you can do. It's a matter for the police to sort out."

Lennon doesn't expect a transformation in supporters' attitudes when he takes Celtic to Ibrox tomorrow for the seventh and most important Old Firm game of the season.

He said: "There might be a few sympathetic voices in the ground among the Rangers fans, which would be nice. But I'm not looking for sympathy.

"I'm looking to go there and win a football match. I don't want the focus to be on me. I've spoken to the Press today and now I want to focus on football.

"I'm not saying Ibrox is going to be a title decider but it could be good for us in psychological terms if we get a positive result."

When Lennon was asked if the events of the next month could decide his future he said: "Possibly, yes. But it might not be my decision. It might involve the Celtic board as well.

"Meanwhile, I'm still not clear on my team for Ibrox. I'll see the players in training then make up my mind.

"I'm pretty sure Rangers won't be as open as Kilmarnock were. Sunday will be tight and tense because there's a lot riding on the result but I want my players to express themselves.

"They're in good spirits but it could be 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 or 6-1. I'm open-minded about the game."

The raids, which police said were ongoing, target postings of religious and racial hate comments about Celtic manager Neil Lennon and Rangers striker El Hadji-Diouf.

Could it be, a Celtic fan arrested for racism ?
    Surely not.

This is seriously dodgy stuff by the way, how can they prove you made those comments ?

It appears to the same old same old from Stratclydes finest. They can't arrest a Rangers fan without tugging a Celtic fan for 'balance'. Watch MI5 catch this bomber in spite of them

On a point of clarification, you are aware that the person investigated by the PSNI for money laundering was found to have no case to answer?

Its well known round here that certain clubs supporters are protested, including the Rangers, because the bile you have posted over the last couple of days would and should have seen you get a permaban from here if you followed anyone else.

I actually never really claimed anything in that post, so you can keep your requests for 'proof' for yourself.
All the media reports are about police looking into Rangers and Celtic fans, I haven't heard one thing to suggest they're looking at other clubs too, hence why I made the joke about a racist Celtic fan (That's right, a joke, nothing to get your panties in a bunch over)

My 'Lolwhat' was aimed at the way McBride described it.
People don't get stabbed in a normal way apparently, it's in a sectarian way.
What's that, putting a knife in to the tune of The Billy Boys ?
