assessment for supplementary welfare allowance?

I've just received a letter today asking me to go to a doctor for a medical examination. I've put in a claim for disability after being on illness benefit and running out of stamps. I'm waiting for hospital test appointments which are taking a long time to come through.
The letter states that this exam is requested by the Community welfare office and I need to bring a letter from my own doctor, 'which may support my claim for supplementary Welfare Allowance.'
Is this an assessment for disability or will I have another appointment for that?
