How come you go up to Dublin but down to the country?

Even people further north of Dublin still go "up" there. This doesn't make sense as "up" usually refers to going north.

Yeah that's an odd one, don't really know why people do it.

My family and I live in Dublin, and my mam always says, "I'm going "down" to Galway"

    shouldn't it be something like,
    "down" to Cork,
    "up" to Belfast,
"over" to Galway, and...I don't know..."back" to Dublin?

I guess it should all change if you're living somewhere else! :D

It's only "up" on a map. I imagine people started saying "up" to the big city and "down" to the rural area before people realised that it didn't make as much sense on the map. It's also a reflection on the centralised nature of Ireland.
