whereas people would probably view you male more often than female - though I could be wrong.
Not a couple of years ago L. It was kinda mad at the time. I had a couple of pretty weird PMs I have to say. Inc one chap who asked me out claiming he liked "feminine and caring women". I blamed a couple of wagons nice ladies for steering people wrong on me, you know your names. You... exhibit A http://wiki.boards.ie/wiki/User:Wibbs :D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Oh you know me L, I've been long a champion for brain gender diffs in many areas, but it's also down to perception too. Well me for example. For a long time on this site people thought I was a woman. I 'read' like a woman apparently. In PI I was told I was sensitive like only a woman could be and a few peeps were really quite freaked out when I said I was male. Giving support in PI I was seen more as "female". When I was more strident in other parts of the site I was seen more as "male"

That's funny, I get exactly the same in reverse...I've lost count of the "he says" or even the shock when it was broken to regular posters in various forums that I was female...I've had to acknowledge that I clearly don't have a very feminine posting style and as I post pretty much as I think/speak - I obviously have quite a male thinking brain & my interests and hobbies would also suggest that. I think there is something to be said for the male/female brains but I presume environmental factors must also play a big part?

Of course, this automatically assumes that empathy is always a positive trait for both the individual and the group - it isn't.

I didn't assume anything! I'm just linking to studies. Empathy is an interesting topic.

It's funny ye talk about posting style, mine seems to be male half the time

    I agree with

But guys can have "female" brains sometimes and vice versa...

This is oddly ironic given recent posts! I posted that saying I have a female brain...but I am a guy! So I was saying guys can have female brains :D

I think everybody reads this survey wrong. Male physical arrousal signifies psychological arousal ( and men are aware of it). Female arousal doesn't necessarily. This the the important sentence:

If these women were shown real depictions of rape they would have lubricated too. That doesn't mean they weren't disgusted. Actually disgusted. Not faking disgust, with real underlying desire but actually disgusted.

An erection is real desire, lubrication is just a defence mechanism.

iIn short you can tell nothing about the female makeup, or desire from the lubrication of the vagina.

I often get erections when I'm not aroused and have no desire for sex.

20 seconds before the end of every class when I was still at school and just before the end of every bus journey.

Likewise there are times when I'm aroused where I don't get an erection. So I don't think it's a very good indicator of a man's arousal.

I took that a while ago, and I came out purely androgynous. But I still suspect its right and left brain they are looking at.

I know I'm late reading this thread but I can't help myself so I'll respond anyway.

For me this part is a bit of a stretch. I see the argument that women hide their fertility alright which may have evolved to keep men interested for long enough to wean any kids, but the "promise of sex"? I'd say the flaccid male member also holds as much promise.

I wonder how the idea of the flaccid male member being sexually appealing might break down along gender lines and also based on one's sexual preference. I know that for me, it holds absolutely no promise at all. I have never understood the kind of "porn" that is aimed at women which shows naked men, who are quite good looking, but whose biscuits are quite limp. It does nothing for me besides making me mildly annoyed.
Depends on ones own interpretation too. IE ...or checking the men's emotional states as women have more to lose from an aggressive/sexually predatory male. Watch how fast the vibe spreads in a group if one woman reckons a guy is acting "creepy". And checking out other women's bodies could also be doing that social comparison and competition thing women do more than men.

I can't speak for other women but I do enjoy seeing men's faces in porn, and the reason why is very simple. It's because I enjoy seeing how much they're enjoying the act. I had always assumed that men liked seeing women's faces in porn for the same reason. *shrug*

Similarly, the reason I enjoy looking at women's bodies is also very simple, it turns me on. I used to think maybe it meant I was bi, maybe it does mean I'm a tiny little bit bi. It's certainly a noticeable amount of pleasure, so it's nothing to do with competition, not for me anyway.

It's possible that there could be mysterious and complex things going on behind the psychological or phyisological scenes so to speak, but it could also be a case where a cigar is just a cigar.

I do anyway. Can't speak for other men.

    Avatar?

Anyway, an erection does not equal arousal. I've had them when I've been far from aroused. Plus as I said in my first post on it, men get erections at doctors, massages and even in sexual assaults. Plus then there are random unexplained ones.

I know what avatars are, I couldn't see anything. I must have selected an option to turn them off at some stage. Didn't even know you could have an avatar on boards.

Coming to this thread late, but for some reason I find myself wanting to comment on this -
Chivers has tried to eliminate this explanation by including male-to-female transsexuals as subjects in one of her series of experiments (one that showed only human sex). These trans women, both those who were heterosexual and those who were homosexual, responded genitally and subjectively in categorical ways. They responded like men.
Speaking for myself, I would describe my sexual response as very atypical for men. I get off on being an object of desire (as someone else put it). I've never been into pron. The article in question describes women watching two men, two women, and a man with a woman, with similar levels of arousal - that probably describes me (I haven't measured myself :pac:).

The author says that her observations point to an inborn system of arousal linked to genetic gender - my personal anecdotal evidence above says otherwise. She also says that it isn't hard to argue that cultural lessons had taken hold - cultural lessons are some of the first things that have to go as you embark on transition.

So I'm not sure how much credence to put in the article, TBH.
