Hey, saw this in the news today. Definitely an interesting way to make a road trip:

NYC cabbie drives 2 guys across US for $5,000
A New York City cab driver has racked up the fare of a lifetime.

Mohammed Alam is being paid $5,000 to drive a pair of friends to Los Angeles. The trio left Saturday night and had reached Las Vegas by Thursday.

Investment banker John Belitsky, of Leonia, N.J., tells the New York Post that the idea was hatched during a birthday celebration for Dan Wuebben of Queens.

Belitsky said they wanted to do something "magical." When they decided on a cab ride to California, they found Alam at LaGuardia Airport and brokered the deal.

The two friends haven't decided how they'll get back yet. As for the cab driver, he says a friend will meet him in Los Angeles and help him make the drive home.

They made a pit stop in Las Vegas on the way out and made more than $2000 playing craps. Well done!

If you do the math the cab driver comes out a bit better off but nothing worth writing home about.

2776 miles in 6 days, so return trip is 12 days and 5552 miles. Let's say he's getting 25mpg on the highway that's a total of 222 gallons at about 3.75 each so $832.50. Let's say his per diem along with overnight accommodation comes to $100 that's 1200.

He's already down to 3000 for 12 days that's only $30/hr. The average wage for a NY cabbie is $20/hr according to a quick google. He got a bit extra but he'd hardly be able to quit after it.

Plus if he owns the cab he's now got an extra 5000 miles up on it and all the depreciation and maintenance that comes with that, if he doesn't own it he's got cab rental charges.

According to another article I read with the same story, it would have cost $17,000 if the meter had been running, but I don't know if that just counts driving time or not.

Now if he can find someone in LA looking for a cab to NY then he'll be a lot better off!!

I agree. He'd probably be better off selling the car in LA or working in LA or something and keeping the mileage down on his cab. But hey, he's getting paid to go on a road trip with, what sound like, fun people.
