Right so after reading around a bit i'm willing to take the plunge. I want to play new games on a 24" monitor that's 1920x1200. Don't need an OS, DVD-drive, network card, mouse or kb.
I've specced something on Hardwareversand (see attachment). I'm thinking of adding in a radeon 5850 1gb as a gpu from pix. Overall it'll be around €600. Will this give solid performance for its price and will there be any bottlenecks or excesses anywhere? Is there anything I can do to reduce costs while maintaining performance? In the future i'd add in a cooler for OCing, an SSD and maybe a second GPU (crossfire) for a graphics bump.

I know the first thing that will spring to mind is changing to an AMD x4 build which will have a cheaper cpu, mobo and ram which would probably drop €100 off the price.
However, the overclocking potential of the 2500k is very appealing and benchmarks compared to other cpus in gaming and cpu intensive tasks like photoshop etc. look impressive. I'm also thinking that an LGA1155 build will be more futureproof compared to an amd x4 build. Will the 2500k provide enough of a (performance/futureproof) difference to warrant the extra money or should I reconsider for an AMD x4 build?

Thats a H67 board, you want a P67 one like this:

I'd bump the case up to the Asgard III, its the same price with a few nicer features.

Apart from that it looks solid. You could save ~€10 by getting cheaper RAM, no need for CL7 tbh.

Thanks for p67 recommendation. But would http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43845&agid=1601 be better as it allows for crossfire?

Just wondering what are the nicer features about the case? Ideally I'd like the case to be as discreet as possible but practical concerns are my main priority.

Could you point me towards the cheaper RAM, don't know a whole lot about it and would prefer to save a tenner when I can!

Theres not much point going for x16/x4 crossfire, you need at least x8/x8 for it to be worth it at all. At your budget, you are better off not worrying about it at all, as you would need a better PSU as well.

    This RAM would be fine:

The Asgard III is just a newer version of the Asgard I with some small tweaks. Theres nothing major new

Okay having done more research, I've decided to upgrade the mobo to the MSI P67A-GD53 for an extra €17 allowing future 8x/8x crossfire/sli and the PSU to the XFX PRO650W Core Edition for an extra €15 allowing more power for a future double gpu set up.

All in all I think it looks good when combined with a 5850. As a first timer, It will come with all the necessary bits?
