Trust me. if you're suffering from D.O.M.S. get into a cold water bath, once you're comfortable (relatively speaking) start adding 2 of those large bags of ice you get in the offie, sit there for 10/15 mins and you'll be amazed at the difference. If you have compression wear then stick them on afterwards for a few hours to get fresh blood flowing through your muscles.

This is the marathon baby, it's not supposed to be easy!

yeah ive seen documentaries of ultra runners on tv doin this before but didnt think i was near that stage yet of needing ice baths ! yikes! Ive a long road of training ahead of me and a few bits to learn. This I feel, is going to be miles(pardon the pun) harder than training for an olympic distance triathlon, which I taught was very tough goin. Would it be an idea to wear compression tights whilst running as well as post run to stimulate blood flow? as well is it true that ice baths are only really effective if taken within the first fifteen min to half an hour post run or possibly beneficial inside 12 to 24 hours after intense exercise? I may have missed my prime healing / recover window for today so??

Jezz i dunno bout that one, sounds drastic  ... but ill definitely throw on an oul bag of frozen peas over the quads anymore. Cheers :)

Trick is, get into bath first then start running cold water, as bath fills up just over your legs throw in the ice, you hardly feel it and it works great. I have only started this after lsrs and find a big difference. I leave shorts on and a hoody and bring a big cup of tea and a book. Trust me it's not too bad at all - surprisingly relaxing. :)

With regard to time frame I've no scientific proof but have also done it that night after a morning run with some resulting soreness and had no pain at all the next day.

I did a very hard weekend before Cork, 10k race Sat followed by a 16 mile LSR on Sun and only got into the ice bath on the Tuesday but it worked wonders for me.

as regards the ice baths, I can't just get to that stage yet but I do the hot/ice cold shower and I find this is great after LSR, especially as the miles go up..

@Younganne, I think we are at similar levels in our training :)

I have just realised after doing some more research on my training - I dont think what I had planned to do will work out.

    I was following this : http://athlone3quarter.com/schedule.php
Under the easiest one (as I am just aiming to complete the marathon)

Yet when I compare the amount of miles per week to the Hal Higdon plan there are big differences.

I think I will switch. I'm all very confused

The novice plan at a glance (IMO) seems to be very low mileage, there's speed runs but no midweek endurance, there's also jumps in the long run from half marathon to 24km to 20 miles?

It wouldn't be for me, Hal Higdon is low mileage but has been consistantly tried and tested, you could incorporate some of the speedwork from the current plan but IMO HH would be better than the Athlone plan.

Edit: Well done on your pb at the weekend!

No time at all, just want to finish. I've just been questioning my ability the last few days as its hard to see now if I can go the 26.2 miles!

I always wonder if my 56min 10k time now is enough of a base to build on in the 12 weeks left!

My first race was 10k at the end of June 2010, I ran 54:07, I then ran 4:15 in DCM the same year. It's not the optimum route to the marathon distance but as you're on the road keep going ;)

I ran 3:43 in Cork in June so sub 3:30 is the next target.

    Hi guys,

Just found a link to this thread on another running site and looks like a brilliant resource!
Have been training since March to build up distance and endurance. Am considering signing up for the Dublin marathon but am not sure yet. I'd love to be able to do it in less than 5 hours and would want to feel confident about being able to complete it before I committ to it! Perhaps someone could advise me as to whether my training has advanced enough to take part...

    First some recent races:
    Irish Runner 5 mile - 43min
    Women's Mini Marathon 10k - 52:51
    Race Series 10m - ?

In training I have run a series of long runs from 10-14miles and my average time for 13.1 miles is 2hours 11mins.

I never take walk breaks in training and currently try to run 4 days per week, usually two shorter runs (4-5miles), one medium (7-9m) and one long (so far 10-14m). Have been following the marathon rookie plan.

Any advise/help/words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I think being involved in this thread will definitely help with my motivation anyway!

    Thanks in advance!

    Aoife

    Welcome to the thread!

you seem to be putting the miles in, and those are decent times for the 5 mile and 10k, so you should be fine, just keep up the training.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Any ideas what a realistic time to expect to finish in might be? I find it hard to imagine going the full 26.2 at the moment but hopefully by building up the mileage it will begin to seem more achievable!
