Is many people going to do the athlone 3/4. I am thinking about doing it as i have a 20 mile planned that weekend. Would many run it as a LSR or PMP?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭chinguetti

The 2hrs pacers in Clontarf were running at even splits. The reason i know this is that i was the other pacer.:D

It usually takes a couple of kms to get to the pace that we need to go at (5.40 a km i think) and then you just run along at that pace for the rest of the distance.

To someone earlier on here who said they would run the first half quick and then slow down for the second half of a marathon, thats a plan for having the most painful couple of hours of your life. If you plan to run a 4h 30 marathon, first half should be around 2.16 for Dublin. Don't try to do a 2 hr first half and hang on for the second, you will implode around the 20 mile mark if you somehow last that long.

The hardest thing to do is the smart thing, the excitement gets the better of you and you run like the clappers. If anyone wants to try this out, run the 10 miler next week. Do the first 5 miles fast and hang on for the second half. Trust me, you'll never try it a second time.

Pacing yourself is hard to learn but like everything, you have to practise it.

How right you are ran the Kildare half last year and ran off to fast at the start struggled the last 3 miles will never do that again if I aiming for 4.30 for DCM does that mean I should aim for app 10 min miles straight from the start would 09.50 be way to quick?

From what I can see from the website the pacers for the Athlone 3/4 marathon will be pacing this as a progression run. So for someone with a target of 4 hours for Dublin the pacer will run an average of 10:13min/miles for the first 1/4, 9:41 for the second 1/4 and 9:17 for the third 1/4.

My understanding of this is that it will give you an idea of what it feels like to run at near PMP when you have 12 odd miles in your legs.

I'm going to sign up for it as it gets great reviews and will be a real indicator of as to where I am at with regards to being able to maintain my PMP.

(I'm planning on running the middle 15 miles at PMP with the first and last 2 miles at an easy pace, but only because Jack Daniels is telling me to :))

There's a thread in the main forum that's updated regularly.
There are 8 people meeting up this saturday, 9am in the papal cross car park.

I am doing it anyway, just to do a LSR somewhere different tbh

I have entered as well. Probably do as an LSR as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 871 ✭✭✭DULLAHAN2

Yeah i was thinking of doing it as an lsr aswell. I was going to race it as a half marathon with 6 odd miles of a cooldown but that would be silly since DCM is only 4 weeks after it and the fact i have to drive hour and a half to it so i reckon a lsr at 9- 9.30 min miles will be better.

Are there pacers for the Phoenix Park National Lottery 10 mile on Sat 20th ?

No but there is for the half marathon. 1:30, 1:40, 1:50 & 2:00 are pace bands.

I'm in for this also and similarly will be doing it at a reduced pace somewhere around 4hr+ Marathon pace. This will be on the back of galway half Marathon the day before (also at training pace) so it'll be a tough weekend for me, but a key one. I'm doing NYC though so I'll have an extra week to recover than the rest of you guys:-)

If you're doing the Frank Duffy 10 mile next weekend, that's good enough as your long run. If you want to make up the miles, you could do a short and easy recovery run on Sunday.

If you're not racing on the weekend, you could run the 6 mile midweek run as a fartlek session. Here's a guide. Warm up for a couple of miles, then do intervals of varying distances and speeds - the shorter the distance you run, the faster you should run. Let your breathing recover completely after each interval before starting the next one.

    So I put 1hr 20 mins for 10 miles into mcmillanrunning.com calculator
It says times for Long Runs and Easy Runs. Which one is for my LSR ?

    Long Runs 9:04 to 10:04
    Easy Runs 9:04 to 9:34

which one is for my Sunday run ?

    Thanks

Easy Run is a run you can easily do but at a slow pace.
Long run is a distance that you do not run regularly or have never tackled before.

    These paces are wrong because

Calculators are predictors of what you should be running for each event if you are training specifically for that event.

You are not running a 10 Mile race in October. Go back to the calculator and enter a realistic time you are aiming for in the marathon, and then use the training paces it spits out.

james not sure where you are based. But i find the group runs in the park a great help to me when i am doing my LSR's not sure i could do them without the group at this stage. I don't know how to do the link but there is a thread in the main forum. I know someone has mentioned it on here before. If you are not based in Dublin they aren't much good to you though.

Are you just running out of steam on the LSRs? How fast are you running them? Are you taking any water or gels? What have been your longest runs apart from these LSRs?

The HH Novice plan I have is 13 miles this week. I know 1 mile is going to make f all difference but I'm just wondering why this is, and if the one I have is an old one or something? Really don't want to sound ridiculous but am just curious?
