Should i be doing 14 LSR this weekend or step back, the last 3 weeks totals have been 21m, 24m, 24m so should i be increasing it??

    Any advice greatly received.

I would step back this week. Your midweek run is increasing, and a 10 mile race is harder than a 10 mile LSR. Take the recovery week, and increase the distance next week.

    Hi ray
I am in a similar situation to james. But i was hoping to maybe get two 20 milers in. I was going to do 18 this Saturday. Since i started the plan quite afew weeks in advance i should be doing a 20 miler the Saturday before the half. Is this wise especially if i want to give the half a good shot or is it ok to do the 20 and just do shorter runs the week of the half.

yes, you could do that - 20 mile run on the weekend, reduced mileage during the week and then the half-marathon.

I would step back this week. Your midweek run is increasing, and a 10 mile race is harder than a 10 mile LSR. Take the recovery week, and increase the distance next week.

Ray - I ran 73mins in the 10 miler on Saturday.

Could you recommend a target half and marathon time?

Could you also point me out a suitable training plan?

I ran 73.51, and I'm aiming for 1.37 in the half, so you should be looking for 1.35 :)
Are you looking for a specific half marathon training plan? Why not just continue the marathon plan?

Seem to be coming down with a horrible head cold. Haven't been out since the 10 mile on Saturday, just havent had the time. Supposed to be heading out tonight for a fartlek session. Is that wise? should I rest up for a few days or just do a couple of easy runs to keep ticking over?

I haven't run since 3 miles last tuesday. Very frustrating indeed. Seeing phyiso tomorrow to see of he cam do anything about it

Just do some easy runs, if anything. No point in pushing it.

Its me again with a question :o. Just doing out a plan for my LSR's for the next 10 weeks. I am following HH novice plan pretty much, but since i started a few weeks ahead i want to get one extra 20 miler in so 2 in total. So starting with this Saturday coming this is what i came up with:
    18m
    14m
    20m
    ½Marathon (17th Sept)
    18m
    14m
    20m
    12m
    8m
    Rest (Oct 29th)

Any input welcomed. Just need to get the next 10weeks sorted in my head now. Thanks

that should be fine but, as you said, take it very easy in the week after the first 20 if you want to perform well in the half.

If you're at week 12 already you're going to have to add in some extra weeks of training anyway. What if you work back from the marathon, and think about the run you will be doing each weekend?
Let's assume these weeks are fixed
    October 22nd - 8 miles
    October 15th - 14 miles
    October 8th - 20 miles

    If you're running the half-marathon that's 13.1 on September 17th.
And your longest run so far was 16 miles, right?

So you have August 27th, September 3rd, 10th, 24th, October 1st - 5 runs to fill in. You have to run an 18 miler, and probably another run in the 18-20 range before October 8th.

    How about

    August 27th - 14
    September 3rd - 18
    September 10th - 16
    September 17th - half marathon
    24th - 14
    October 1st - 18
    October 8th - 20
    and then taper?

The half-marathon in the middle is a little awkward...

Hi Ray thanks for that reply I should have said I will be away in September for three weeks will still be following the program but will miss the HM will be in the heat of Spain. I intend to do the Athlone three quarter Marathon could you adjust your suggestion to in corperate Athlone thanks again for the help is exellent

I wouldn't count on getting any really long runs in when you're in Spain (though obviously the more you can do, the better). The Athlone 3/4 marathon will be your longest run when you get back, after that you'll start reducing the mileage. So I would try to get a 20 miler in before you go on holiday too.

Had another session with the physio yesterday, he said I should be OK to go back running this weekend, just wondering how to build the distance back up?, I haven't ran since last Wednesday and missed the last 2 LSR's.

Did the physio say anything about starting back with shorter runs? Might be worth doing just 5/6 miles this weekend, to ease back into it.

    Gutted,

But have made the decision to pull out of the DCM for this year. I've been landed with a load of work that requires me being away for chunks of time between now and october compromising the amount of training I can fit in. :-(

I could technically still do it but don't want to risk an injury by not clocking up enough mileage before october. Might sign up for Cork next year instead and will still do the half in september.

Many thanks to RayCun for tips/advice/encouragement and good luck to all in October!!!

Yeah he said to cut the miles back for a bit, just looking at the schedule the week 10 LSR is 15 miles which will be a big jump for me, I don't want to risk injury again but I dont want to fall too far behind either.

The worst thing you can do is try to make up the time too fast and put yourself out again.
If you take 6 this weekend as your start point, and 20 miles on October 8th as your goal, draw up a schedule to build yourself up gradually to that point. If you're doing the half marathon you'll have to factor that in, and you should include one step-back week in your plan.

Cheers Ray, how does this look?

    27/8 - 6
    3/9 - 11
    10/9 - 16
    17/9 - Half
    24/9 - 14
    1/10 - 18
    8/10 - 20

Hi, looking for some advice please. I've been following a mixture of the HH novice 1 &2 for DCM. My last LSR was week before last - 14 miles no problem. Then I was completely floored by a virus last week and couldn't run at all. Back on track this week with a 3 miler and a 7 miler so far. Question relates to my LSR for this week - should I go with the 15 miles I was planning for last week or go a bit less ? Really enjoying the training and want to avoid messing up at all costs. Thanks. C

If your last LSR was 14 miles, you are probably a bit ahead of schedule anyway. What was your plan for the remaining weeks?
