Should I try to complete the full marathon in 42 days time :/

    2 things:

    1) You might think otherwise, but this is very little training for a marathon. The mileage is way too low if you want to do yourself justice (or even be able to enjoy the marathon).

    2) But yes, if you really want to, you can run the marathon. I ran my first 2 marathons on even less mileage than that and I managed to finish them both. Will you be able to do it? Yes! Will you have a good time based on that? No!

Regarding distances. Unfotunately this is something you will need to be aware of especially if you are using Garmin to monitor splits. The distance of a course is measure from the shortest race line so if you take a corner wide, move to the side for water or bob and weave through competitors remember all this things have an influence on the distance you actually run

Don't know how to get motivation from today!

Tough times in training and racing make us mentally stronger, the harder the journey the sweeter the destination.

If you ran the half marathon over the weekend, take all of these runs easy because you'll still be recovering.
If you didn't race, you could do some strides, or some marathon pace miles, in that midweek run. Be careful though - you should be feeling a bit fresher after last week's recovery, and you might be tempted to push it too much. Remember to leave something for the weekend's long run.

Should I try to complete the full marathon in 42 days time :/ ? See my training below

(I'm moving all marathon training questions into one of these logs)

As TFBubendorfer said, that is not really a lot of training for a marathon. If you look at that table in the thread, you'll see most people have run about twice that far in about the same time (and these are all novices too)

If you just want to get around the course, and don't care how long it takes... sure, you'll almost certainly get around. But you're not in a position to expect much more.

Tiptoe, put the half down to a bad day at the office. It is not your main aim, the marathon is. You finished it on a bad ankle. Don't be so hard on yourself. So what if you didn't break any world records. Chin up forget about it and focus on the big one now. :)

Hi. Did the half marathon yesterday in 2.13.49. Was delighted as it was a 3 minute PB. However, I was wrecked at the end - threw everything at it in the last 2 miles. My aim for DCM is simply to finish. I think yesterday has taught me that I will have to take it handy to do this. LSRs going well - aiming for 18 miles next week. Just wondering, any idea what pace would be reasonable to aim for (if this makes any sense). Don't want to go out to fast and blow up !

Been following this thread but haven't been in a position to post all summer. Really appreciate all the advice in it.

I would aim for a sub 5 hour marathon time. Go out with the 5 hour pacers and see how you feel towards the business end of the race.

    Hi,

I'm doing the Dublin City Marathon on October 31st. My goal all along has been to hit 30-35km in my training runs before the actual marathon (I've no specific time in mind, I just want to be able to run from start to finish - ie, no walking). I did the Dublin Half Marathon on Saturday in the Pheonix Park and was intending to go back to increasing the distances in my long training runs (last one before the Half Marathon was 26km). In my head I would keep increasing the distances until the week before the marathon.

Now I've just been speaking to a pretty experienced distance runner in work. He's now told me that I shouldn't be doing anything that long near to the marathon or my body won't have time to recover and I'll get tired during the race, which seems to make sense. So his suggestion was:

Sat 24 Sep: ~20km (recovery from the Half Marathon)
Sat 1 Oct: 28-30km (last big run before the Marathon)
Sat 8 Oct: ~20km (start to wind down)
    Sat 15 Oct: ~16km
    Sat 22 Oct: ~10km

And that would have me recovered in time for the day. Is this good advice? Or should be sticking to my earlier schedule, or a mix somewhere in between?

    ***EDIT***
I should mention I'm also doing 2 x ~5km runs midweek in between, though none the week before the actual marathon.

Back from holidays Hows everyone been?. The weather was great but hard to run in. I was getting used to it at the end but all runs were at an easy pace (9:30 -10:00 mm) anything faster and the heat would get too much for me.

Have some serious long runs to do between now and the begining of taper so its gonna be a struggle i think.

You're most likely going to find things a bit easier now, heat training is fantastic!

That schedule of long runs looks much better than constantly increasing. The training plan I'm posting up here week by week looks like this at the end
    Sat 8 Oct: ~32km
    Sat 15 Oct: ~20km
    Sat 22 Oct: ~13km
but yours is fine. You have that longest run, and you also have a taper down to the finish.

You should really try to run more midweek though - your longest run should be less than half of your total weekly distance, but at the moment it's pretty much all you're doing. Try to add in another run, and make all of those runs longer. If you need to slow down to get the extra distance in, do it.

I think this is my favourite post here. You're training even less than me! At last someone I can relate to!

As I said above, I do augment mine with a bit of walking, like a tough 6 hours on the Comeraghs last Saturday to add to the 25 miles running during the week before it.

Either way, I'll be running the marathon. I've never gone more than 16 miles in a run. I have never run for more than about 2 hrs 10 mins. I have run a few half marathons though. Maybe you should enter a couple to give you the bit of push to up the ante a little. Think you should be able to get a couple in between now and the big race. Know nothing much about training and all that, but do know the guides tend to suggest winding down in the 3/4 weeks before the marathon, so think you may have to get in a bit of mileage into the legs over the next 3 weeks or so and half marathons might give you that focus.

Sorry now, I have to put my hand up and say someone with a lot more expertise here might suggest my comments are nonsense. Don't necessarily go by me.

I would strongly advise you to get a couple of longer runs (both distance and time) in before you start to taper.

What time are you hoping for in the marathon?

Oh no, sorry, should have specified that I do intend to get at least one 22/23 miler in at some stage in next 2/3 weeks.

Checked half marathon time in Kilomarathon and it was about 1.52 something (it was slower than Maxi Marathon, but don't think Dublin will have the same descent!). Will be aiming for about 4.15 in the marathon itself. Others say go for 4.00, but as it's my first, completing it without stopping will be the main goal.
