As others have said, you have very little mileage in your legs so the 20 to 26 mile will be a bad experience if you go out too fast. I would suggest ignore the calculators and multiply your most recent 10K time by 5.
Now taking your injury into consideration, you should either consider not doing Dublin or doing it at a very comfortable pace.

Is your PT a runner or has experience with runners ? If not consider getting another PT with experience with runners to look you over.

My point exactly! Enjoy your first, race the rest!

Thanks for the tips guys. I will prepare a proper programme for my next marathon after dublin. I dont like the sound of "blowing up" lol. I will calm down and go for a more realistic time. 3 30 to 3 40 would be better. My 10k time is 39:47(UCD track). I'd say I put in nearly 100% effort there. It should be safe to multiply that by 5.25-5.5 to give a safe time. I probably was getting too dependent on marathon calculators.
My PT has done DCM twice so will talk more about training with her. Cant wait to run alongside people in DCM as I've done all my runs on my own so far. I better concentrate on getting better for the moment though.

This thread suggests Euro Cycle - Euro baby on South William Street. These are the ones I mean, you don't need to take them with water. The downside is they aren't as strong. I prefer the thicker, caffeinated ones, they have more of a kick, but those ones do need to be taken with water.

Hi. Went to Euro Cycle on Friday and got some of the Isogel citrus + with caffeine - still like a sports drink - not thick. I tried them on my 18 mile LSR today. I have nothing to compare them with but must say that I found the 18 miles today much easier than my 15 mile one a few weeks ago. I took one gel at 5 miles (was passing by the car) and one at 13. Would definately recommend the practise to anyone who has not used them before. Took me a while to get to grips with the first one ! Still not sure how I would take them actually 'on the run' as opposed to standing by the car !

On another note - does anyone manage to sleep in the night or two before the marathon. I was only due to do 18 miles early this morning but couldn't sleep properly thinking of it :o Felt like a right wally - not sure if it was because I needed an early start - was running by 7.20 ..........

Thanks again for the advice - it's much appreciated.

Probably worth practicing taking them while running all right. I only ever manage to tear a corner off with my teeth - hands are usually far too sweaty to grip - and squeezing/sucking it out through a tiny hole.

'They' say that the important sleep is two nights before the marathon. It's very common not to sleep well the night right before the race, but if you had a good sleep the previous night (ie, Saturday night for Dublin) you'll be fine.

Rest week now before the big 20 next week. Look how far you've come though - in week 1 you had four runs and a grand total of 18 miles. This week you're taking it easy, but still doing over 30 miles. You are all much stronger than you were just a few months ago, and much better able to cope with the longer distances.
As with last week, if you feel able for it, try some faster miles in the 9 mile run - whichever type of speed you think you need to work on. Some strides at the very end of your run, a few miles at half-marathon pace in the middle of the run, or even the whole 9 miles at marathon pace. Don't push too hard though. This is still a recovery week, you want to feel stronger at the end of the week than you do today.

Quick question re hydration. For long runs is there any way of knowing how much water you should be taking?

Im quite a sweaty guy when i run. Did 16 miles today and when I got home I had lost almost half a stone in weight. Lost all energy and basically the run was a disaster.

Is there any consensus on how much water you should be drinking or is it a personal thing?

i have a hydration belt but it only holds two bottles with about 400ml in each. Today that wasnt nearly enough. And when i ran out of water i couldnt take my gels. Lesson hard learned

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

As far as I know, it takes a while (like, over an hour) for the water you drink on a run to be absorbed anyway, so it is more important to be well-hydrated before you start.
Personally, I'll only stop once for a drink on a long run, just because of the inconvenience of stopping (and the greater inconvenience of carrying water with me). Anything shorter than a couple of hours I wouldn't bother stopping. In a race on the other hand, I'll take water whenever its offered, because there's no need to stop. But then when I get home I'll drink a couple of pints straight away, and try to drink about the same throughout the day.

Hi Ray, Just wondering about next week... I'm doing novice 2 HH and he lists 5, 5, 5 for mid week runs next week before the 20. I think it was listed for a few wks ago too but I ignored and did 5, 8 and 5. I know some of the longer runs mid week are run at pace with novice 2 and is this the reason? I'm nervous reducing the mid week mileage at this stage. What would you reccomend? Thanks for any advice!!!!

Yes, the mileage is a little lower in Novice2, because in most weeks the middle run is done at PMP. When you did 5, 8, 5 did you run the 8 at pace?

Hi Ray, yes I always run them at about 9:30 min/mile which is about 45 seconds faster than my LSR pace. Does that sound about right?

Yes, that's about right (you could even run your LSRs a little slower). You're going for a 4.15 marathon, right?

Yep indeed 4.15 is the plan. Is hard running slow though isnt it!!
BTW well done on your Rathfarnham PB :D

not sure how to add to the table :(

    4 sessions this week:
    4.5 - avg 7.48
9.5 (very hilly, including a 1.5 climb up glenamuck road from Carrickmines) - avg 8.44
    5 - avg 7.35
    18 - 9.31

Felt really good this week after a week's break with sore ankle. Has reacted great so far. Aiming for sub-4 hr DCM, avg 9 minutes per mile

    Ray,
I'm following HH novice 2 also, I don't remember why:). Ambitiously (foolishly?) looking for a 3.30 race. This week I deviated from the plan due to illness and no oppertunity for a long run, I did 8k at pace with some hill repeats on Tuesday, 10k on Wednesday, 14k quickish yesterday and a 50k cycle today. Next week should be step back but I'll be doing Athlone 3/4 on Sunday. What would you recommend for this week (HH is 5m, 8m, 5m)? I would hope to get back into the plan straight after Athlone and do the 20 the following weekend. Training is going well so far and body holding together fairly well.

I'd stick with the 5, 8, 5. If the second 5 is on Thursday, that gives you plenty of time to recover ahead of Athlone - and anyway, Athlone is not a race as such, more like a specialised training run, so I wouldn't taper for it.

That's three sessions at faster than marathon pace, plus your LSR. You should slow some of those runs down so you don't wear yourself out.
